Risk of poisoning due to coolant ingestion | Open the coolant system only when its temperature is below 90 °C. Open slowly the cover and let the excess pressure go out. Coolant should not be kept in beverage bottles. Use gloves, appropriate clothes and protective glasses. | |

2 | Remove the head cover | Valid for engines with direct vent. | |

3 | Remove the thermostat and the housing | ||
4 | Remove the fuel filter | ||
5 | Remove the power steering hydraulic pump | When belt driven or by air compressor. | |
6 | Remove the exhaust manifold | ||
7 | Remove the intake manifold or charge air manifold | ||
8 | Remove the injection and return pipes. | ||
9 | Remove the rocker arm assembly | ||
10 | Unscrew the cylinder head bolts (1) | ||
11 | Screw-in the two lifting rings (2) and remove the cylinder head (1) | Suitably rest the cylinder head on two wooden blocks to prevent injection nozzle damage. | |

12 | Remove the cylinder head gasket (3). | ||
13 | Clean the deck of engine block (4) and blow the tapped holes with compressed air jets | ||
| Installing | ||
14 | Check the cylinder head's mating surface | ||
15 | Install a new cylinder head gasket (3). | The indication OBEN TOP has to face up. | |
16 | Install the cylinder head (1) on engine block deck and remove the lifting rings (2) | ||
17 | Apply the tightening sequence on the cylinder head bolts (1) | ||

18 | Install the rocker arm mechanism. | ||
19 | Install the intake manifold or charge air manifold | ||
20 | Install the exhaust manifold | ||
21 | Install the power steering hydraulic pump | When belt driven or by air compressor. | |
22 | Install the fuel filter | ||
23 | Install the injection and return pipes. | ||
24 | Install the thermostat and the housing | ||
25 | Adjust valve play | ||
26 | Install the cylinder head cover | Valid for engines with direct vent. | |
Valid for engines with crankcase pressure regulating valve. | |||
| Indications on coolant | ||
27 | Fill the cooling system with coolant prepared in the correct proportions | Trucks with engine 372.9, 376.9, 377.9, 386.9. | |
Buses with engine 372.9, 374.9, 376.9, 377.9, 386.9. | |||
28 | Check engine oil level | Replenish if necessary. | |
29 | Run the engine at low revs until service temperature is reached | Do not raise engine revs, while the oil pressure light does not go off. | |
30 | Check all engine points for tightness |
