Danger

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off during lifting

Only lift vehicle at the lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

AS00.00-Z-0032-01A

Warning

Risk of injury from being trapped in the swivel range of steered axles

Ensure that no persons or objects are in the swivel range of all steered axles when turning the steering wheel. Do not stand in the swivel range of the additional steering axle when the engine is running.

Remove

1

Secure vehicle against rolling

2

Lift 1st front axle until the wheels turn freely and jack up

3

Lift 2nd front axle until wheels can turn freely, and jack up

4.1

Turn steering to right until nut (5) at pitman arm (3) can be removed

On left-hand drive vehicles

4.2

Turn steering to left until nut (5) at pitman arm (3) can be removed

On right-hand drive vehicles

5

Remove cover (6)

6

Detach cap (4) from pitman arm (3)

If present.

7

Unscrew nut (5) from pitman arm (3) and screw on again by hand

Screw in nut (5) up to safety collar.
This prevents the thread of the ball joint on the drag link (1) from being damaged during removal.

Counterhold the ball joint with an Allen wrench if necessary.

8

Move steering to straight-ahead position

9

Position ball joint puller (7) and secure against falling down

Use a commercially available ball joint puller (7) with a yoke bore of 35 mm.
Fasten ball joint puller (7), e.g. using two cable ties loosely to the drag link (1).

10

Pry off drag link (1) using ball joint puller (7) from pitman arm (3)

The drag link (1) detaches suddenly.

11

Remove ball joint puller (7)

12

Remove cap (4) from 1st steering idler arm (9)

If present.

13.1

Turn wheels of 1st front axle to left until puller can be attached

On left-hand drive vehicles

If the drag link (2) has been removed, turn the wheels by hand directly at the 1st front axle.

13.2

Turn wheels of 1st front axle to right until puller can be attached

On right-hand drive vehicles

If the drag link (2) has been removed, turn the wheels by hand directly at the 1st front axle.

14

Unscrew nut (8) from 1st steering idler arm (9) and screw on again by hand

Screw in nut (8) up to safety collar.
This prevents the thread of the ball joint on the drag link (1) from being damaged during removal.

Counterhold the ball joint with an Allen wrench if necessary.

15

Pry drag link (1) off 1st steering idler arm (9)

The drag link (1) detaches suddenly.

Puller

16

Move steering to straight-ahead position

The elevation on the 1st steering idler arm (9) must be horizontal so that the drag link (1) can be detached from the 1st steering idler arm (9).
The wheels of the 1st front axle do not have to be in the straight-ahead position. When the drag link (2) detached, it is possible to turn the wheels of the 1st front axle.

17

Unscrew nut (8) and detach drag link (1) from 1st steering idler arm (9)

18.1

Turn steering completely to left

On left-hand drive vehicles

When doing so, have the drag link (1) held by a second person. Make sure that the drag link (1) does not tilt when the steering is turned.
The wheels of the 2nd front axle are also steered by the pressure in the steering cylinder.

18.2

Turn steering completely to right

On right-hand drive vehicles

When doing so, have the drag link (1) held by a second person. Make sure that the drag link (1) does not tilt when the steering is turned.
The wheels of the 2nd front axle are also steered by the pressure in the steering cylinder.

19

Unscrew nut (5) and remove drag link (1)

To remove the control rod (1), turn the steering to the right (with left-hand drive vehicles) or to the left (with right-hand drive vehicles) if necessary.

Install

20

Insert drag link (1) into pitman arm (3)

To insert the drag link (1), the steering must have been turned to the left on left-hand drive vehicles or to the right on right-hand drive vehicle.

21

Position new nut (5) onto pitman arm (3)

22.1

Turn wheels of 2nd front axle to left by hand directly at axle until drag link (1) can be attached to 1st steering idler arm (9)

On left-hand drive vehicles

It is not advisable to turn the wheels on the 2nd front axle using the steering wheel because the pressure always causes the steering cylinder to extend as far as the end stop.

22.2

Turn wheels of 2nd front axle to right by hand directly at axle until drag link (1) can be attached to 1st steering idler arm (9)

On right-hand drive vehicles

It is not advisable to turn the wheels on the 2nd front axle using the steering wheel because the pressure always causes the steering cylinder to extend as far as the end stop.

23

Attach drag link (1) to 1st steering idler arm (9) using new nut (8)

Counterhold the ball joint with an Allen wrench if necessary.

24.1

Turn steering to right until nut (5) can be tightened

On left-hand drive vehicles

24.2

Turn steering to left until nut (5) can be tightened

On right-hand drive vehicles

25

Tighten nut (5) at pitman arm (3)

Counterhold the ball joint with an Allen wrench if necessary.

*BA46.40-N-1004-06J

26

Attach new caps (4)

If covers (4) were installed.

27

Install cover(6)

28

Move steering to straight-ahead position

29

Lift 2nd front axle, remove jack stands and lower wheels

30

Lift 1st front axle, remove jack stands and lower wheels

31

Perform a test drive

Only if the drag link (1) was replaced.

During the road test check the overall steering behavior of the vehicle.

If the vehicle pulls to the left or to the right or the steering wheel is not in the straight-ahead position when the vehicle is being driven in a straight line.

Check center steering position and adjust if necessary.
