Align vehicle between the four columns of the vehicle lift and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points

specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

Remove wheels

Unscrew stabilizer from front axle

Slacken lock nut on tie rod ball head on driver's side

Pull off ball heads on both pitman arms

Remove engine mount on driver's side

Unscrew high-pressure expansion hose and return hose from steering gear

Remove clamp screw from universal joint



Pull universal joint off drive shaft

Unscrew steering from front axle and remove

Convert steering components if replacing steering gear

 Refit screw joints for high-pressure expansion hose, return hose and rubber hose of hydraulic line onto new steering gear.

 Steering systems which have been installed before August 95: Measure thread length of screw fitting of high-pressure connection. Replace short threaded fittings.

Install

Turn steering to the right

 Turn to the left on left-hand drive vehicle.

Install steering

 Replace bolts (10).

Screw ball head onto tie rod on driver's side

Turn steering wheel to center position

 Steering wheel lock latches.

Turn steering gear to center position

Mount universal joint on drive shaft and install fitted bolt

 Push universal joint down until the bore hole aligns with the annular groove in the pitman arm shaft.

Fit ball heads

 Replace self-locking nut.

Check toe and adjust, if necessary

 To adjust, loosen the clamps of the boots on the tie rods.

 If necessary offset the universal joint by one tooth.

 Do not twist the bellows.
