Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off during lifting | Only lift vehicle at the lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Danger | Risk of death from lowering vehicle when working between wheels and body. Risk of injury from pinching or crushing when working on the air suspension. | Testing and repair work between the wheel and wheel arch or in the wheel well should only be performed if the vehicle is secured using suitable support fixtures to prevent it from lowering.
Topical note | Special instructions for lifting and supporting vehicle
| Remove | ||
1 | Secure vehicle at rear axle using wheel chocks to prevent it from rolling away.
2 | Switch on ignition | ||
3 | Completely lower vehicle level at front axle using level control operating unit | To depressurize the air suspension bellows on the front axle.
4 | Switch off ignition | ||
5 | Remove compressed-air connector (2)
6 | Remove nut (3) | ||
7 | Remove screws/bolts (4)
8 | Raise vehicle at front and jack up on frame | Lift vehicle until there is a gap of approx. 70 mm between the compressed air connection on air suspension bellows (1) and the upper air suspension bellows support.
9 | Remove air suspension bellows (1)
| Install | ||
10 | Clean contact surfaces of air suspension bellows (1) on air suspension bellows carrier and on plate at top
11 | Insert air suspension bellows (1) | Do not pull the air suspension bellows (1) apart; the plastic piston must not protrude beyond the rubber bellows.
12 | Install nut (3) | Tighten nut (3) firstly by hand.
13 | Lower and jack up front part of vehicle at frame approx. 30 mm
14 | Install bolts (4) | Bolt, bearing bracket air suspension bellows to front axle
15 | Tighten nut (3) | Union nut, air suspension bellows to plate top
16 | Install compressed air connector (2)
| Check | ||
17 | Switch on ignition | ||
18 | Slightly raise vehicle at front axle using level control operating unit, and then lower again onto jack stands | Only lower far enough until the vehicle is seated on the jack stands again. The air suspension bellows on the front axle must have pressure applied to them for the leak test.
19 | Switch off ignition | ||
20 | Check compressed air connector (2) for leaks | Use commercially available leak detector spray.
21 | Raise vehicle at front, remove jack stands and lower vehicle
22 | Switch on ignition | ||
23 | Move vehicle to driving level using level control system operating unit
