Open engine hood

Detach cover (9) of cylinder head cover (4) toward top

Remove engine intake air duct upstream of air filter housing

 Danger!

Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.

Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Remove housing (5) of coolant thermostat

 Installation: Replace sealing ring.



Detach engine wiring harness for removal of cylinder head cover (9)

Remove cylinder head cover (9)

Detach front cover (10) from cylinder head

Crank engine at crankshaft in direction of rotation until piston of cylinder 1 is positioned on ignition TDC

 The TDC marking on belt pulley/ vibration damper must be aligned with positioning edge on timing case cover.

Cams for the intake and exhaust camshaft at cylinder 1 must be positioned upright at an angle.

 Installation: Inspect basic position of camshafts.

Remove center bolt and remove camshaft adjuster (3)

 At the same time unhinge timing chain and secure against falling down. The direction of loosening for center bolt on intake and exhaust camshaft is the same (see arrow).

 Installation: Camshaft adjusters (3) do not require any particular adjustment as they feature a positioning pin (1). To preclude confusion, camshaft adjusters are marked with "A" for exhaust camshaft and with "E" for intake camshaft.


