Due to recent events please remember that any incorrect tire replacement (removing and fitting) means that the tire pressure sensor functionality may be

impaired or mechanically damaged .

In both cases this leads to a system failure or
a system failure of the tire pressure monitor. In such an instance the tire pressure sensor must be replaced.

Please note that these instructions must be strictly observed:

In June 2005 on some model series the system supplier of the tire pressure monitor was changed from Beru to Siemens. The components from all the suppliers are not compatible with one another. In the case of incorrect or mixed installation of individual components, such as tire pressure sensors, the functionality of the system is no longer assured.

It is therefore all the more important that when replacing a tire pressure sensor or when retrofitting/converting, only tire pressure sensors from the respective system manufacture are used. In particular this applies when taking over existing wheel-and-tire assemblies with tire pressure sensors from another vehicle.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As a rule damage caused during assembly operations is not recognized immediately. Therefore a visual inspection of the tire pressure sensors, in particular after dismantling the tires, is indispensable.

Based on this fact it is essential to observe the following information during tire disassembly and assembly.

Recognition feature for wheels with tire pressure sensors:

For attaching tire pressure sensors, automotive manufacturers use a tire inflation pressure valve made from aluminum (A) in place of a metal valve (B) or rubber valve (C).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In addition we recommend that you apply a conspicuous note (see assembly specification) in the visible area of the tire mounting device on dealing with wheels with tire pressure sensor when replacing tires (disassembly/assembly):

Assembly specification:

When replacing tires (disassembly/assembly) of wheels with tire pressure sensors (tire pressure monitoring system) it is essential to observe the following assembly specifications.

(this Service Information should be provided as an attachment).

After a tire replacement, an air pressure change or a wheel change an activation depending on the system must ensue corresponding to the operator's manual.

Disassembly

The bead breaker shovel of the tire mounting device must not be positioned in the valve area (1).

This applies both to the outside and inside of the tire.

Disassembly

The bead breaker shovel must be positioned opposite the valve area (1).

Possible causes for tire pressure sensor damage when disassembling tires

When disassembling the tire, the assembly head of the tire mounting device and assembly lever must not be positioned in the valve area (1) and not on the opposite side as well.

The tire's increased bead cable forces press on the
tire pressure sensor (3) and can likewise damage it (see next picture).

The tire's increased bead cable forces can break the tire pressure sensor in the visible area (2) and/or on the bottom side.

Disassembly and assembly

When disassembling the tire, position the assembly head of the assembly device approx. 15 cm behind the valve (1) in the direction of rotation (arrow).

When assembling the tire, position the assembly head of the assembly device opposite the valve (1).

The tire pressure sensor (3) must not be treated with tire assembly paste or soapy water.

The assembly aid (tire paste or soapy water) may only be coated on the rim flange and the tire bead as otherwise these penetrate the tire pressure sensor and may impair the functionality. Both components should always only be lightly moistened.
