The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit (N41) is also referred to as "Navigation box". The function and menu guidance are provided by the manufacturer and are not specific for Mercedes-Benz. Detailed operating instructions in PDF-format for viewing on PC are available in the manufacturer's content manager software or from the inside site www.beckermappilot.com. Brief instructions from the manufacturer can be found in the packaging of the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit.
General function requirements for navigation
Circuit 30g ON
Transport mode not active
Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is inserted into the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit mount
Signals from at least three Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites present
Radio (Audio) is switched on
Restarting the navigation system is possible via the RESET button on the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit or by briefly removing the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit from the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit mount.
Navigation, general
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is supported by the following vehicle components:
The "Navi" button on the radio (Audio) activates the menu
Global Positioning System (GPS) signals from the GPS antenna
Operation via the left multifunction steering wheel button group and right multifunction steering wheel button group (with CODE CL4 (Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer))
Traffic Message Channel (TMC), received by the FM, AM antenna via the FM, AM antenna amplifier and the TMC antenna splitter
Voice control via the hands-free system microphone, audio output via the vehicle speakers including audio fadeout, can be adjusted in the system menu of the radio (Audio)
Picture output and map display on the integrated display of the radio (Audio), and also in the instrument cluster (IC [<KI]) control unit; the view and the menu display are not generated in the radio but in the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit
The interface software to the vehicle is flashable using Daimler processes, navigation software only with Internet compatible PC (with content manager software)
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is inserted into the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit mount. A pin (slider) is also required for unlocking, which can be ordered from Mercedes-Benz Accessories as a replacement part.
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit has a removable rechargeable battery that can also be ordered from Mercedes-Benz Accessories as a replacement part.
Navigation, function sequence
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit receives the GPS signals for position finding via a direct line from the GPS antenna.
Since GPS operates in the gigahertz range (microwaves) and the signals are weak, the following events may lead to reception interference: Atmospheric interferences (e.g. bad weather, water vapor, fog), multi-path reception due to reflections of the signals (e.g. at building walls) or signal shadowing (e.g. in built-up areas, in tunnels, due to tall buildings or trees).
TMC traffic messages to be taken into account for route calculation are received via a direct line from the FM, AM antenna and forwarded via the FM, AM antenna amplifier and from there via the TMC antenna splitter to the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit.
The control signals from the left multifunction steering wheel button group and the right multifunction steering wheel button group (with CODE CL4 (Multifunction steering wheel with trip computer)) are transferred to the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit via the following route:
Steering wheel electronics
Steering LIN
Steering column tube module (MRM) control unit
Chassis CAN
Instrument cluster (KI) control unit
Interior CAN
Radio (Audio)
Telematics CAN
The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit receives the voice input from the hands-free system microphone via a direct line to the radio (Audio) and with an analog audio channel. The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit forwards the voice output via a direct line to the radio (Audio). The radio (Audio) amplifies the signals and forwards them to the speaker system.
More detailed information on the speaker system is available in the "Speaker output function" document.
The display used to show menu guidance, picture and map material is integrated into the radio (Audio). The picture signals generated by the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit are transmitted via an LVDS line (low voltage differential signaling) to the radio (Audio).
Theft protection
A theft protection facility can be called up from the menu. The navigation module can be coupled to the vehicle (to the vehicle identification number (VIN)) by entering a freely selectable Personal Identification Number (PIN). The Becker® MAP PILOT control unit then functions only in this vehicle. The theft protection is disabled in the same menu by entering the PIN.
Software update
The navigation software and the map data can only be updated by the customer via the manufacturer's Internet portal. A Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection on the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit is used to access the Internet via the content manager software of the manufacturer.
Map data can be updated via Mercedes-Benz Accessories using a Secure Digital (SD) card slot in the Becker® MAP PILOT control unit.
