Remove/install

 Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between four pillars of hoist and position four support plates at hoist mounting points specified by vehicle manufacturer.

Only tighten nuts and bolts of chassis components when vehicle is in a ready-to-drive condition.

Raise vehicle with vehicle lift

Remove rear wheel



Remove twelve-point collar nut (12) from rear axle shaft (37)

Detach brake caliper from wheel carrier (7)

 Attach brake caliper to vehicle without tension to relieve brake hose so that it is not damaged during repair.

 The brake hose is not removed from the brake caliper during repair work.

Detach rear brake cable (112a) from automatic cable slack adjuster of parking brake

Remove rear brake cable.

Remove left rear rpm sensor (L6/3) or right rear rpm sensor (L6/4), remove clip and hang electrical lines to one side

Check whether rear axle shaft (37) is firmly attached to rear axle shaft flange (10)

 Do not damage the rubber boot and rotor for the rpm sensors on the rear axle shaft (37).

If rear axle shaft is jammed:



Press rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle shaft flange (10).

Lift wheel carrier (7) using transmission jack and transmission platform until the rear axle shaft (37) is horizontal

Detach torque strut (3) from wheel carrier (7)

 Installation: The rear axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the bolted connection.



Detach camber strut (2) from wheel carrier (7)

 Installation: The rear axle shaft (37) must be horizontal when tightening the bolted connection.



Unscrew spring control arm (6) on wheel carrier (7)



Lower wheel carrier (7) and pull bolts of spring control arm (6) and thrust arm (5) out of wheel carrier (7)

Lift out wheel carrier (7)

 Keep receptacle ready for drops of oil.

Lever rear axle shaft (37) out of rear axle center assembly (13) and remove rear axle shaft (37)

 Do not fit assembly lever to protection ring, as the protection ring may be damaged as a result.

 Support the assembly lever on the rear axle center assembly (13) e.g. using an open-end wrench.

 Installation: Replace circlip (11) on inner splined shaft profile.



Checking

Check constant velocity joints and rubber boots on rear axle shaft (37) for leaks and damage

 If the rubber boot or constant velocity joint is defective, the rear axle shaft (37) must be replaced complete.

Install in the reverse order

Check oil level in rear axle differential (13) and correct if necessary

 Premixing old universal hypoid transmission oil and new FE hypoid transmission oil should be avoided due to the better fuel economy.
