Modification notes
16.3.05 | Work step: Raise vehicle and lower as well as ''Removing/installing the engine mount" no longer required |
| Removing | ||
| From a mileage of more than 50,000 km a timing belt (3) should always be replaced when removed | ||
1 | Remove timing belt cover (3)
2 | Tighten spacer (1) using bolt (2) and washer | Only turn the engine with the installed spacer (1) at the bolt (2) otherwise the crankshaft can get damaged.
| |||
3 | Position engine to TDC | Only turn engine in its direction of rotation. Refer to:
Inspect timing | |||
4 | Screw in centering pin (4) by hand into the coolant pump (9) housing down to the stop on the relay lever (7)
5 | Screw in centering pin (4) further until the timing belt tensioner (8) can be secured using a cotter pin | Turn centering pin (4) at a maximum speed of 30°/second otherwise the timing belt tensioner (8) can get damaged.
The hole in the timing belt tensioner (8) ram must coincide with the sich hole (arrow) in the timing belt tensioner (8) housing.
| |||
6 | Secure timing belt tensioner (8) by putting a suitable cotter pin through the hole (arrow)
7 | Remove centering pin (4)
8 | Slacken bolt (6) on tensioning pulley (5)
9 | Slacken timing belt (3) by turning the tensioning pulley (5)
10 | Remove timing belt (3)
| Installing | ||
11 | Inspect timing | ||
12 | Lay on timing belt (3)
| |||
13 | Screw in centering pin (4) by hand into the coolant pump (9) housing down to the stop on the relay lever (7)
14 | Screw in centering pin (4) further until the cotter pin in the timing belt tensioner (8) can be moved easily | Turn centering pin (4) at a maximum speed of 30°/second otherwise the timing belt tensioner (8) can get damaged.
| |||
15 | Turn engine at the bolt (2) though 90° in in its direction of rotation | Ensure that the timing belt (3) does not skip otherwise the engine can be damaged by wrong timing.
The timing belt (3) between the camshaft sprockets as well as between the exhaust camshaft gear and the crankshaft gear is pre-tensioned by turning the engine.
16 | Tension and adjust timing belt (3)
| |||
| |||
| |||
| |||
17 | Pull out cotter pin in timing belt tensioner (8) and remove centering pin (4)
18 | Turn engine at the bolt (2) twice in its direction of rotation
19 | Inspect timing | ||
20 | Check timing belt tension
21 | Unscrew bolt (2) and remove the spacer (1)
22 | Install timing belt cover (3) |
