Remove heat shield (4).

Drain rear axle differential oil.

Support and lash rear axle differential down securely.

Remove pump unit of the rear electrohydraulic suspension and secure against falling down with connected lines.

 The pump unit of the rear electrohydraulic suspension consists of the left rear electrohydraulic controller unit (M67/2) and right rear electrohydraulic controller unit (M67/3).

Remove bolts (2) .

 Bolt, elastomer bearing for rear axle differential to rear axle carrier at rear

Remove nut (3) and take out screw.

 Nut, elastomer bearing on rear axle differential to rear axle carrier at front

Lower rear axle differential until the screws (1) are accessible.


Do not lower rear axle differential too far.
Otherwise the drive shafts will be damaged.

 End cover (5) is fastened with eight screws (1).

Unscrew screws (1) and remove end cover (5).


Do not damage sealing surfaces when prying off end cover (5).
Otherwise leaks may occur.

 Installation: Apply sealant to sealing surface on end cover (5).

Clean sealing surfaces on rear axle differential and end cover (5).

Assembly cleaner

Install in the reverse order.

 Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Carry out engine test run and check rear axle differential for proper operation and leak tightness.
