Switch off ignition

 Danger!

Risk of explosion caused by escaping oxyhydrogen gas. Risk of injury caused by caustic burns to eyes, skin and mucous membranes from battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or metal spatter due to short circuit. Risk of burn injuries caused by short circuit. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing battery electrolyte (contains diluted sulfuric acid) or absorption of lead over the skin or orifices

No fire, sparks, open flames or smoking.

Wear acid-resistant gloves and clothing and safety glasses with side guards.

Do not place any conductive objects on the battery and avoid any short circuit from battery positive to ground.

Only fill liquid battery electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) into suitable and appropriately marked containers.

Unscrew oil filter cover (7.2)

 When the oil filter cap (7.2) is pulled out, the engine oil flows back into the oil pan.



Separate engine wiring harness (1.1) at oil pressure sensor (B12)

On engine 904.904/908 up to engine end no. 040487

Disconnect engine wiring harness (1.2) at oil temperature/oil pressure sensor (B11/B12)

On engine 904.904/908 as of engine end no. 040488 and 904.914/923/936

9.1

Unbolt oil pressure sensor (B12) at oil filter housing (7)

On engine 904.904/908 up to engine end no. 040487

 Counterhold screw plug at oil filter housing; catch engine oil which flows out.

 Installation: Install new sealing ring (12). Counterhold screw plug at oil filter housing.



Remove oil pressure/oil temperature sensor (B11/12)

On engine 904.904/908 as of engine end no. 040488 and 904.914/923/936

Unscrew bolt (3) at bracket (4)



Slacken bolt (2) at alternator (G2), swivel bracket (4) and alternator (G2) away from oil filter housing (7)



Disconnect oil pressure line (8) at oil filter housing (7)

 Collect engine oil which flows out.

 Installation: Install new sealing rings (11).

Pull out oil filter cap (7.2)

 Collect engine oil which drips out of oil filter element (7.1)

Inspect oil filter element (7.1) for damage and soiling, if necessary

Replace oil filter element (7.1).

 Installation: Inspect sealing ring (7.3) at oil filter cap (7.2), replace if necessary.

Unscrew bolts (5, 6) at oil filter housing (7)



Take off oil filter housing (7) off crankcase

 Collect engine oil which flows out.

Take gasket (10) out of oil filter housing (7)

 Installation: Replace seal (10).

Remove oil bypass valve and inspect

On engine 904.904/908 up to engine end no. 016109

Install in the reverse order

Adjust engine oil to correct level

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Start engine and observe oil pressure gauge with the engine idling

 Do not increase engine revolutions until oil pressure is displayed.
The oil pressure gage must indicate oil pressure after about 10 seconds.

Switch off engine and check for leaks

 Visual inspection, wait about 5 minutes before inspecting engine oil level and adjust to correct level.
