Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.
Do not fill engine oil into beverage containers.

Check

Check engine oil level.


The engine oil level must not lie above the maximum marking.
Engine damage can occur otherwise.

If engine oil level is incorrect,



Correct engine oil level.

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Start engine and warm up to operating temperature.

 Coolant temperature approx. 80 °C.

Switch off engine.



Remove

Remove left cylinder head cover.

Check

Turn engine in direction of engine rotation until the cam (3) on the compensating element (2) to be checked is on its base circle.

Press compensating element (2) downwards via roller-type rocker arm (4) using suitable tool (5).


Do not use a steel tool. Press compensating element (2) downwards using normal force of the hand.
This prevents damage.

 The compensating element (2) must not lower with normal force of the hand and must lower only very slowly with strong force.

Perform check of additional compensating elements (2) in the same manner.

If several compensating elements (2) drop,



check oil ducts and oil feed bores of the compensating elements (2) for contamination and blow out oil ducts with compressed air in the flow direction of the oil.

If one compensating element (2) lowers to strongly compared to the other compensating elements (2) or the oil feed bores are plugged,



Replace affected compensating element (2).

Remove/install hydraulic valve play compensation elements on left cylinder head

If several compensating elements (2) are defective,



Check oil pressure.
