Remove/install transmission with torque converter

Remove/install

Disconnect battery ground line

Pry off ball socket, compress plastic clips with pliers and remove control pressure cable (98)

Unscrew drain screws (2, 4a) on torque converter and unscrew transmission, drain automatic transmission fluid

If the automatic transmission fluid smells burnt or it is interspersed with lining abrasion, the torque converter, oil cooler lines and oil cooler must be flushed: 

Refer to step 22

If there are metal shavings in the transmission oil, the torque converter must be replaced. Metal particles cannot be completely eliminated by flushing, and may result in transmission damage later.

 Observe local disposal regulations for the oil



Unscrew hexagon head bolts (17) for driven plate/torque converter



Support transmission

 Components can be damaged if the transmission lowers

Remove rear engine crossmember (19)

Unscrew exhaust bracket (10) and U-bracket (11) by removing self-locking nuts (7)

Installation: Replace self-locking nuts

Remove shield (5)

Unscrew front propeller shaft (71) to transmission

Unhook exhaust system (60) at the rear hanger

 Detach using a V-belt

Unscrew speedometer shaft (9) and/or inductive sensor (85a)

Disconnect solenoid valves connector (Y3/1x1)

Unplug line of oxygen sensor on tunnel, loosen mounting clips

Detach connector (8) of starter lock-out switch

 Turn vinyl ring upwards

Remove clip retaining device (32) and unhook shift rod

Detach vacuum line (12)

17

Unscrew banjo bolts (13a) for feed lines and return lines of oil cooler (13)

Unscrew oil filler pipe (15)

19

Unscrew ground strap (27) from transmission

20

Unbolt transmission from engine block and remove downwards at an angle



 Installation: Observe correct seat of dowel pins

Remove/install torque converter



Flushing out oil cooler with oil cooler pipe and torque converter

In event of transmission oil that is burnt or contaminated with wear debris:

Check torque converter

If necessary when replacing the torque converter also replace the radial sealing ring of the primary pump.

Install in the reverse order

Fill transmission and torque converter

 without changing oil filter

Check oil level in automatic transmission and correct if necessary.
