Danger! | Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running | Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself. | |
1 | Start engine | To do this, move the front wheels into the straight-ahead position. | |
2 | Check play (a) at steering wheel | Turn steering wheel alternately to left and right until front wheels move. | |
If the permissible play (a) at the steering wheel is exceeded, the steering gear and all steering transmission parts to the steering gear must be checked for unacceptable play and repaired if necessary. | |||

3 | Check the rubber boots on the tie rod and drag link ends | Carefully check rubber boots for damage around entire circumference and in the folds resulting from the installation position. | |
Check that rubber boots are firmly seated on the contact surface for the pitman arm. | |||
Do not replace damaged or leaking rubber boots. Replace corresponding ball head or entire track or tie rod if necessary. | |||
4 | Check each tie rod and drag link end individually for play | To do this, pull and push firmly by hand in the axial direction of the ball pin. | |
If the permissible axial play is exceeded, the corresponding tie rod or drag link end must be replaced. | |||

5 | Check steering mechanism | Check tie rods and drag links, steering knuckle arms and steering arms and steering gear pitman arms for damage and correct mounting. | |
If damage or faults are determined they must be rectified. |
