Warning

Risk of injury. Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects.

Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.

AS00.00-Z-0002-01A

Warning

Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

AS20.00-Z-0001-01A

Warning

Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Topical note

Notes on coolant

AH20.00-N-2080-01A

Wash without using cleaning product

1

Start the engine and let it running up to reach the operating temperature

Coolant temperature, approx. 80 °C.

2

Stop the engine and let it cool down by approx. 30 min.

For the oil occasionally contained in the expansion tank can sediment.

3

Check for residues of oil in the expansion tank

If there is oil in the expansion tank:

Aspirate the coolant mixed with oil from the expansion tank and dispose in an ecologically correct way.

4

Completely drain the coolant

AR20.00-B-1142EVI

5

Remove the expansion tank

6

Detach the inlet and outlet hoses from the heater

7

Rinse the heater with drinkable water

If possible, use hot water or warm. Dispose the rinse water in an ecologically correct way.

8

Install the inlet and outlet hoses of the heater again

9

Detach the coolant hoses in the interfaces between the engine and the radiator

10

Rinse the engine and the radiator with drinkable water

If possible, use hot water or warm. Dispose the rinse water in an ecologically correct way.

11

Install the coolant hoses in the interfaces between the engine and the radiator

12

Completely detach the coolant hose in the inlet and outlet connection of the retarder an push the hose on the retarder pipe

AR20.20-B-7470-01EVI

Only on vehicles with Code B3H (secondary water retarder)

13

Loosen the inlet and outlet hoses of coolant of the retarder in the clamps at the engine

AR20.20-B-7470-01EVI

Only on vehicles with Code B3H (secondary water retarder)

14

Rinse the inlet and outlet hoses of coolant of the retarder with drinkable water

Only on vehicles with Code B3H (secondary water retarder)
If possible, use hot water or warm. Dispose the rinse water in an ecologically correct way.

15

Install the coolant hoses of the retarder

AR20.20-B-7470-01EVI

Only on vehicles with Code B3H (secondary water retarder)

For cleaning and rinsing, clamps with screw can be used.

16

Install the open coolant thermostat

AR20.10-B-2461EVI

Open coolant thermostat for oil removal

WF58.50-B-2003-01EVI

The two circuits are awash through the open coolant thermostat.

17

Prepare a mixture of cleaning solution with 3% of low-alkalinity-cleaner and drinkable water

Prepare the cleaning solution outside of the engine cooling system. The addition of the cleaning product directly into the engine cooling system damages the system components.
Mixture ratio: 30 ml of cleaning product for 1 l of drinkable water. Discard the cleaning solution in an environmentally friendly way.

Cleaner for engine and cooling system for oil drag-in, 10 l

18

Rinse the expansion tank with a cleaning solution containing 3% of cleaning product

19

Install the expansion tank

20

Fill up the engine cooling system with the cleaning solution containing 3% of cleaning product

21

Set the heater on maximum heating performance

22

Turn on the ignition and select the 4th stage of braking of the retarder

The retarder will be awash. To fill up the retarder, the compressed air system must be completely loaded.

23

Start the engine, let it warm up to the coolant reaches the temperature of 87 °C, and keep the engine running during approx. 5 min with the coolant in this temperature

For the coolant reaches the temperature of 87°C, if necessary, cover the front section of the radiator.

Vehicles with Code B3H (secondary water retarder)

The vehicle must not be moved during the oil removal:

Otherwise, the retarder will be damaged

24

Stop the engine and let it cool down to up to the coolant reaches the temperature of approx. 50 °C

25

Switch off the retarder

26

Completely drain the cleaning solution of the engine cooling system

Rinse the cooling system immediately after the oil removal at least two times with drinkable water:
Residues of cleaning solution damage the components of the engine cooling system.

Discard the cleaning solution in an environmentally friendly way.

Wash the system after the oil removal

27

Rinse the heater, the engine, the radiator, and the coolant pipes of the retarder with drinkable water

To rinse the system with drinkable water, carry out the work steps from 6 to 15. Dispose the rinsing water in an ecologically correct way.

28

Fill up and rinse the engine cooling system at least two times with drinkable water

Vehicles with Code B3H (secondary water retarder)
Let the engine running by approx. 5 min. for each rinsing.

The vehicle must not be moved during the rinsing with drinkable water:

Otherwise, the retarder will be damaged.

29

Check the rinsing water of the last rinsing procedure for residues of diluted oil

If still there is oil in the rinsing water:
repeat the oil removal procedure.

Carry out the work from the work step 20.

30

Check the total acidity content of the last rinsing procedure with a ph test strip

Fill up the engine cooling system with coolant immediately after the last rinsing.
Residues of rinsing water cause corrosion on components of the engine cooling system.

The test strips are available on EPC and they indicate the ph index.

If the ph index of the rinsing water of the last rinsing procedure is not neutral:

Repeat the rinsing procedure of the engine cooling system with drinkable once again.

31

Replace the open coolant thermostat by the coolant thermostat removed previously

AR20.10-B-2461EVI

Clean the coolant thermostat before installing it.
