| Removing | ||
1 | Remove propeller shaft (2)
2 | Pull rear axle shaft out of differential assembly | Only one rear axle shaft must be pulled out of the differential assembly.
3 | Measure pinion drag torque and record results | The pinion drag torque measured at this position is the basic figure required during installation of the collar nut (3).
| |||
4 | Remove collar nut (3) | When removing the collar nut (3) no impact wrench/driver may be used, as the two tapered roller bearings shift due to the blows on the drive pinion (7) and as a result damage to the bearing and gear set can occur.
| |||
| |||
5 | Remove drive flange (5)
6 | Remove radial sealing ring (6)
| Install | ||
7 | Install new radial sealing ring (6) | Coat the non pregreased sealing lip on the radial sealing ring (6) with hypoid automatic transmission fluid.
| |||
Hypoid gear oil | |||
8 | Slide drive flange (5) on the drive pinion (7) | No hammer or comparable tool may be used, otherwise the two tapered roller bearings shift due to blows on the drive pinion (7) and as a result damage to the bearing and gear set can occur.
9 | Tighten collar nut (3) with new O-ring (4) | When tightening the collar nut (3) no impact wrench/driver may be used, as the two tapered roller bearings shift due to blows on the drive pinion (7) and as a result damage to the bearing and gear set can occur.
Coat thread of collar nut (3) with Loctite 577.
| |||
| |||
| |||
| |||
Loctite 577 | |||
10 | Mark collar nut (3) | Position of collar nut (3) relative to the left outer edge of safety groove (8).
11 | Tighten collar nut (3) by a half groove width (A) of the safety groove (8) further
12 | Measure drag torque and compare it with the recorded base figure | If the measured pinion friction torque is smaller than the noted basic value, the operation steps 10 to 12 must be repeated sufficiently often until the measured pinion torque is the same or slightly greater than the basic value.
If the pinion torque was not determined before the repair, a pinion torque of approx. 3 Nm should be achieved.
| |||
| |||
| |||
13 | Secure collar nut (3)
14 | Install rear axle shaft
15 | Install propeller shaft (2)
16 | Check oil level in rear axle | Adjust to correct level if necessary
| Rear axle - oil change |
