Remove/install

Disconnect ground lead from battery

Installation: Code radio.
Set timer.

Detach front wheels

Remove bracket (4)

Place lines and hoses to one side.

Disconnect connector on backup light switch (S19.1)

Unhook shift cables (2) on transmission

Unscrew starter

Do not unplug electrical connections from starter.

Insert engine holding device (3) and relieve load on transmission mount

On vehicles with diesel engine, detach oil reservoir for power steering pump.

Remove bottom section of soundproofing

Drain transmission oil

Detach axle shaft (5) from drive flange

Turn axle shaft (5) and tie up to one side.

Detach left transverse control arm on axle/engine subframe

Detach clutch slave cylinder (15)

With engine 111.948/978 and engine 601.942/970

Do not disconnect hydraulic line. Place clutch slave cylinder (15) to one side.

Unplug pressure hose on central clutch release bearing, unscrew nut of clamp from pressure hose on transmission

With engine 111.950/980

Installation: The safety clamp must be installed before inserting the pressure hose.

Collect escaping brake fluid.

Remove speedometer sensor (G4)

Replace seal.

Unscrew bolt (9) on transmission housing mount

The transmission must be raised with the engine holding device (3) until the bolt (9) can be removed and pushed in without offset.

Remove longitudinal axle member (8) from axle/engine subframe

Remove center drive shaft with mount (12)

Attach transmission jack

Installation: Ensure that no components are damaged when moving the transmission in and out.

Secure transmission on special tool using knurled nut.

Pay attention to correct seat of supports.

Unscrew bolts (10) on transmission

Observe installation position of coolant pipe bracket (11).

Remove transmission

Secure transmission.

Clean the inside of the transmission bell housing using a rag.

Detach left drive flange on transmission

Only when replacing the transmission.

Install in the reverse order

Checking

Check clutch, replace if necessary
