Preconditions

Vehicle speed  20 km/h

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) is switched on, the ESP® shutoff indicator lamp (1) and the ESP® indicator lamp (2) in the instrument cluster control unit (ICUC) on vehicles with code J6A (Classic cockpit) or in the instrument cluster control unit screen (ICS) on vehicles with code J6B (Multimedia cockpit) or code J6C (Multimedia cockpit, interactive) are off.

Function

The electronic brake system (EBS) control unit monitors the course behavior of the towing vehicle and its also monitors the lateral acceleration on corners to detect any vehicle tendency to overturn. To do so, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP®) control unit sends the signals from the integrated lateral acceleration sensor to the electronic brake system (EBS) control unit.

The electronic brake system (EBS) control unit activates a reduction in vehicle speed through the drive control control unit (CPC5) or the engine management (MCM) control unit as soon as - due to inappropriate cornering speed - the permissible lateral acceleration is exceeded and an increased risk of overturning is detected.

If the tire pressure monitoring system (TPM) control unit detects a drop in pressure here, caused by a tire blowout, the electronic brake system (EBS) control unit lowers the control threshold.

If, despite reduced vehicle speed, it is not possible to stabilize the vehicle when cornering, the electronic brake system (EBS) control unit initiates automatic braking of the vehicle.

While the vehicle speed is being reduced or the vehicle is being braked, the ESP® indicator lamp (2) in the instrument cluster control unit (ICUC) on vehicles with code J6A (Classic cockpit) or in the instrument cluster control unit screen (ICS) on vehicles with code J6B (Multimedia cockpit) or code J6C (Multimedia cockpit, interactive) flashes.
