MODEL 414.700

The service intervals that are possible with ASSYST are as follows:

For gasoline engines between 15 000 and

30 000 km

For the direct-injection diesel engine between 20 000 and
40 000 km

The actual service interval achieved depends on the startup mileage and the driving conditions (see remaining mileage).

Startup mileage and remaining mileage.

The startup mileage is the minimum service interval in km/miles which must be driven before the next service. However, this only applies if the specified oil quantity was added at the last oil change.

The startup mileage depends on:

The set quality factors
(The quality factors are factory-set to default values and can be changed using the Star Diagnosis system)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The startup mileage is not related to the driving conditions (evaluation of driven mileage) or to any oil top-ups.

The default value is 15 000 km for gasoline engines and 20 000 km for direct-injection diesels.

The actual value may vary, however, depending on the quality factors.

The startup mileage is automatically reset to its initial value by the oil change reset function after every oil change. The startup mileage is an internal operand and cannot be displayed on the instrument cluster.

Star Diagnosis can be used to display the startup mileage.

The instrument cluster displays the remaining mileage.

The remaining mileage equals the startup mileage immediately after an oil change. However, this only applies if the specified oil quantity was added at the last oil change.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The remaining mileage is the distance remaining from the current mileage reading until the next service. The possible interval is at least as long as the remaining mileage indicated immediately after an oil change, and can be no greater than double the startup mileage.

The remaining mileage depends on:

The startup mileage

The driving conditions (for this there is an evaluation of the distance covered)

Any oil top-ups

In this way ASSYST takes the driving conditions into account. With a good evaluation (e.g. few cold starts, no high engine speeds, few short journeys, little or no trailer-towing) and oil top-ups, the driver receives a bonus extending the remaining mileage and thus the service interval.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The system also takes into account whether the vehicle is actually being driven or just left to idle. ASSYST constantly receives data about the vehicle's operating conditions.

With the best evaluation, only 0.6 km are counted for each full kilometer actually driven.

When the evaluation is poor (e.g. frequent short journeys, frequent cold starts), the remaining mileage and thus the service interval are smaller than for a good evaluation (assuming the same quality factors).

With the worst possible evalaution, up to three kilometers are counted for each full kilometer actually driven.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The diagram on the right illustrates the startup mileage and the remaining mileage in the form of a bar chart with the example of gasoline engines:

At each oil change the startup and remaining mileages are set to the initial value. The startup mileage (upper bar) is shown here as the default value of 15 000 km (hatched + shaded portion). The startup mileage may deviate from the 15 000 km (e.g. 14 000 km; hatched portion) if the quality factors do not match the default settings. The startup mileage can also be less than 15 000 km if less than the specified oil quantity was added at the last oil change. The remaining mileage (lower bar), however, is always 15 000 km immediately after an oil change. The service interval too is always at least 15 000 km.

With appropriate bonuses (good evaluation of the distances driven) and oil top-ups, the total remaining mileage, and thus the service interval, can be extended to a maximum of double the startup mileage, here 30 000 km (white portion).

However, a startup mileage of less than 15 000 km reduces the maximum achievable service interval.

In connection with this, see also the graphs in the document "Engine oil monitoring".

Warning threshold (km)

The warning threshold can only be set to either 1000 km or
2000 km. The value is set using Star Diagnosis; the default setting is 1000 km.

When the remaining mileage drops below the set warning threshold, the remaining mileage is displayed automatically.

The remaining mileage is displayed (in kilometers or miles according to the country coding):

On demand from the driver

Automatically after five seconds with the starter switch in position 2 or while driving if the warning threshold is reached.

The service symbol and the remaining mileage in kilometers are displayed for ten seconds

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Automatically after five seconds with the starter switch in position 2 or while driving if the remaining mileage is exceeded.
In this case the display flashes with the service symbol and the remaining mileage in kilometers with a negative sign.

In addition a short warning tone is sounded.

The remaining mileage is displayed with a resolution of 100 km.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Normally the remaining mileage is displayed. However, to ensure that even infrequent drivers are properly notified that a service is due, the time data is always processed in the background. The remaining mileage is compared with the remaining time on a daily basis. Under certain conditions the display switches over and shows the remaining time.

(see document "Remaining time").

If ASSYST is unable to obtain certain data, e.g. because a sensor has failed, it switches over to stored substitute values. An appropriate entry is made in the fault memory of the relevant engine control module.

The data is preserved if the operating voltage fails.
