1 Nut
2 Propeller shaft
3 Collar nut
4 Drive flange
5 Cover panel
6 Radial sealing ring
| Removing | ||
1 | Remove propeller shaft (2) from drive flange (4) | Secure propeller shaft (2) to prevent it from falling.
2 | Lock the differential lock mechanically
3 | Remove left rear axle shaft
4 | Measure pinion drag torque and record results | The pinion drag torque measured at this position is the basic figure required during installation of the collar nut (3).
| |||
5 | Release collar nut (3) | The securing tabs must be completely sheared off, as otherwise any residue of the securing tab, when unscrewing the collar nuts, can damage the thread of the drive pinion gear.
6 | Detach collar nut (3) | Never use an impact wrench to remove or install the collar nut, as the kickbacks against the drive pinion would displace the two tapered roller bearings, moving them out of adjustment and leading to a total loss of bearings and gear set.
| |||
| |||
7 | Remove drive flange (4)
8 | Remove cover plate (5)
9 | Remove radial sealing ring (6)
| Install | ||
10 | Install new radial oil seal (6) | Apply a coating of hypoid gear oil to the lips on the radial sealing ring (6).
| |||
11 | Install cover panel (5)
12 | Install drive flange (4) with new collar nut (3), tighten collar nut (3) | Never use an impact wrench to remove or install the collar nut, as the kickbacks against the drive pinion would displace the two tapered roller bearings, moving them out of adjustment and leading to a total loss of bearings and gear set.
| |||
| |||
| |||
13 | Mark alignment of collar nut (3) relative to left outer edge of securing groove on the drive pinion
14 | Tighten the collar nut (3) by a further one half groove width
| |||
15 | Measure drag torque and compare it with the recorded base figure
If the measured value is less than the noted basic value, operation steps 12 to 14 must be repeated until the measured value is equal to or slightly greater than the noted basic value.
If the pinion friction torque was not determined prior to the repair work, a minimum pinion friction torque of approx. 3 Nm should be reached, otherwise the bearings and the gear set could be irreparably damaged.
16 | Secure collar nut (3) | Only if the value measured under operation step 14 is equal to or slightly greater than the noted basic value.
| |||
| |||
17 | Install left-side rear axle shaft
18 | Unlock the differential lock
19 | Install propeller shaft (2) on the drive flange (4) |
