Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
1 | Place the vehicle on a level place to work safely
2 | Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn off the main switch | Detach the battery negative lead releasing its end fastened to the chassis frame.
Avoid detaching the negative lead end attached to the battery pole.
3 | Slacken the rear wheel fastening nuts
4 | Lift the vehicle and support it on safety stands conveniently placed under the side rails, ahead and aft the axle, on vehicle both sides, to make it possible to remove the spring packs. Chock also two rear axles | Greater care to lift the vehicle will have to be observed on a laden vehicle.
The vehicle must not be lifted on only one side with the opposite wheel remaining supported by the ground. The vehicle will have to be lifted equally on both sides.
5 | Remove the rear wheels |
| |
6 | Remove the spring from the center bracket |
| |
7 | Loosen the filler plug (17) with the sealing ring (16), remove the screws (15), the washers (14) and the cover (13) | Catch the oil in an appropriate container to discard it according to the environmental protection norms.

| Check | ||
14 | Clean and check all components for condition | Replace: seals (8) and (9), shutter ring (6), felt protector ring (5) and cover gasket (12).
If necessary: | |||
| |||
Replace bearings (3) and (4), seal slide race (7), thrust nut (10) and slotted nut (11).
| Assemble | ||
15 | Install on the center bracket, the flt protection ring (5), the plug ring (6) and the seals sliding race (7) | Lubricate the sliding race (7) with lubricant oil.
Automatic transmission fluid SAE 80, DB supply specification 6634.00
16 | Install the center bracket, the bearing (4) with the inside race heated-up beforehand, the assembly line © and the thrust nut (10) and, tighten the nut with the hex socket (D). Wait to the bearing cool-off to air temperature and, only then, remove the assembly line ©
Heat-up the bearing inside race to approximately 80 °C with an appropriate inductive heater.
