Remove

1

Place the vehicle on a level place to work safely

The front spring removal and installation works described here are basic. Depending on the type of vehicle and the manufacturer of the springs, there may be some differences, such as springs with different leaf sizes and shapes, clamps and supports.

It is important that the suspension springs are always repaired in pairs, i.e., always repair the RH and LH springs on the same axle.
Whenever you remove and install the leaf springs, consider that the nuts of the leaf spring mounting clamps should be retightened upon the next vehicle overhaul.

If the vehicle is loaded, take due care while lifting.

2

Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn off the main switch

If possible, disconnect the end of the negative battery cable attached to the chassis frame stringer. Avoid disconnecting the end of the negative cable attached to the battery, to prevent damage to the battery clamp.

3

Loosen the front dampers from the bottom anchor and remove the (damper) bracket from the adapter (20) for fastening the shock absorber to the spring

Excessive strokes may damage the dampers.

4

Release the side arms of the torsion bar

Danger

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.

AS00.00-Z-0010-01A

6

Support the vehicle on trestles conveniently placed under the stringers, on both sides (front and rear), to enable safe work.

The vehicle must not be lifted on only one side with the opposite wheel remaining supported by the ground. The vehicle will have to be lifted equally on both sides.

Warning

Risk of injury caused by pinching and crushing when opening and closing engine hood

No one should be within the swivel range of the engine hood as it is being opened or closed. Always open engine hood all the way to the end position until this engages in the front locks.

AS88.40-Z-0001-01A

7

Open the hood to facilitate access

AR88.40-B-1000B

Warning

Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted

Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure it with the safety strut.

9

Slightly lift the front axle with care until the front spring joints are free

Safely chock the front axle so as to keep it in this position while removing and installing the springs.

10

Remove the front wheels

11

Loosen the self-locking nuts (7) from the "U" clips (6), without removing them

12

Remove the grease fittings (16) from the front and rear spring joint pins

13

Remove the self-locking nuts (18) from the leaf spring front bracket (4), the leaf spring rear bracket (5) and pivot shackle (12)

Remove the three threaded locking studs (17). Use a copper or aluminum hammer.

14

Screw the puller on the front joint pin (13) and remove the hinge pin

15

Similarly, remove the pins (13) from the joint shackle upper and lower (12) joint

16

Remove the self-locking nuts (7), the spring "U" clips (6), the clamp positioner (8) and the front disc spring (1) suspension stop (9)

17

Slowly lower the front axle (2), collect the spacer washers (14) and the sealing rings (15)

Mark the spacer washers (14); later, assemble them at the same positions to adjust the lateral play of the joints.

18

Carefully remove the complete front disc spring (1) so as not to damage the fitting hole of the primary screw (spike) on the front axle (2)

The spike fitting hole on the shaft is important because it defines the alignment of the axle relative to the vehicle, and may also affect the caster angle.

19

If necessary, remove the front springs and replace the eye bushings

AR32.20-B-0201C

In case you find the discs are damaged or worn.

Install

20

Replace the spring joint components and install it on the leaf spring front (4) and rear (5) brackets

AR32.20-B-6721D

21

Validate the cleaning of the spike fitting hole and the front disc spring seating surface (1) on the axle (2)

22

Properly fit the spring and mount the suspension stop (9) and the clamp positioner (8)

23

Apply a light coat of grease to "U" clip (6) threads and mount them on the front disc spring (1) with new self-locking nuts (7), slightly tightening the nuts on both sides.

Spring clips in poor condition or with the damaged screw should be replaced.
The final tightening of the spring U-clips, to the specified tightening torque, will be applied later to the vehicle resting on the ground.
