Warning | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
1 | Start the engine | Access for maintenance and repair work execution vary according to the body type/manufacturer.
2 | Check the exhaust gas turbocharger (1) for uncommon noise and vibration | Uncommon noise and vibration may be caused by damage to the exhaust gas turbocharger rotors and lack of leak tightness in the exhaust, charging and intake air systems.
3 | Check the leak tightness in the pipes between the air filter and the exhaust gas turbocharger (1). Correct if necessary | The entry of foreign material may cause damage to the exhaust gas turbocharger rotors (1).
4 | Check the charging system leak tightness on the pipes, correct if necessary | Leaks can be checked by touch and through the application of soap foam along the piping, connections and hoses.
5 | Check the leak tightness of the exhaust system | Leaks are detected through discoloration by heating of the leakage area.
6 | Stop the engine | Wait for the engine cooling.
7 | Remove the flange with the engine brake system |
| |
8 | Remove the air intake hose of the exhaust gas turbocharger (1) |
| |
9 | Check the rotors for damages caused by foreign material |
| |
Foreign material getting in the exhaust or intake air system will damage the exhaust gas turbocharger rotors. Small particles wear off the leading edge of the blades. Larger, hard particles tend to tear or cut the blades.
If occurs damage caused by foreign material, a complete cleaning in the exhaust manifold and in the intake air system is essential.
Installation: Replace the damaged exhaust gas turbocharger (1).
10 | Check the free operation of the rotor shaft (2), and the radial and end plays |
| |
. | |||
The rotor shaft (2) of the exhaust gas turbocharger (1) must rotate smoothly and uniformly.
In the event of damage, replace the exhaust gas turbocharger (1).
11 | Check the control fin (3), control fin axle (4) and operating unit (5) conditions |
| |
. | |||
In the event of control fin (3) damage, crimped control fin axle (4) or excessive play/damage/leaks in the operating unit (5), replace the exhaust gas turbocharger (1).
