Important repair information
The integral carrier is flexibly decoupled from the body by four bearing elements (elastomer bearings). When raising the vehicle at the integral carrier, the mounts for the bearing elements (elastomer bearings) are pressed onto the body. When lowering the vehicle, this status is retained.
This leads to an increase in structure-borne sound (humming and droning noise) and, under certain circumstances, to a change in the suspension tuning.
Do not raise or jack up model 638 at the integral carrier.
Model 639, 636 can be raised at the rear axle differential (arrow) and at the integral carrier (arrow).
Important information on model 447, 448
If a gear is engaged (manual transmission) or position "P" is selected (automatic transmission) and the parking brake is applied at the same time, the drive train is subjected to mechanical stress. If the wheels are removed in this condition, the rear brake disks will have a tendency to turn relative to the wheel hub.
The locking screw of the brake disk cannot reliably prevent the brake disk from turning because the forces generated can (depending on the boundary conditions) be relatively high.
To remove the rear wheels or when performing further work on the drive train (e.g. propeller shaft, rear axle differential, axle shafts, etc.), the vehicle must be raised and lowered without subjecting the drive train to mechanical stress.
When doing so, it is important to observe the following:
Vehicles without electric parking brake (EFB)
The parking brake must be released before the vehicle is raised.
Vehicles with electric parking brake (EFB)
On vehicles with manual transmission, neutral must be engaged when the vehicle is raised. If necessary, secure vehicle against rolling away.
On vehicles with automatic transmission, the "N" stage must be selected when the vehicle is raised. Since, irrespective of the currently selected gear range, stage "P" is selected automatically when the engine is switched off and the driver door is then opened, stage "N" must therefore be selected manually with the driver door open and the key inserted. The key must, however, not be removed afterward as stage "P" is always selected when the key is removed. If necessary, secure vehicle against rolling away.
With the vehicle lowered and stage "N" still selected or neutral still engaged, the wheel bolts (which are not yet tightened to the specified value) can be tightened without further measures being necessary.
