| Degreasing measures for the cooling system are recommended in case of coolant contamination by engine oil. | ||
| If engine overheating tendencies are observed for no apparent reason, a descaling and chemical stripping procedure is recommended. | Before descaling and chemically stripping the system, coolant degreasing is required, even if there are no signs of contamination by lubrication oil. | |
Danger! | Risk of burning due to high coolant temperatures. | Do not remove expansion tank filler cap at system temperatures above 90 °C. Should it be absolutely necessary to remove the filler cap at engine temperatures in excess of 50 degrees, proceed with utmost care to avoid accidents. Cover the filler cap with a thick cloth, turn it to 1st stage and let the steam leave the system, then remove the filler cap. Wear protective clothing.
1 | Remove filler cap (1) from expansion tank.
Danger! | Risk of burning. | To drain the cooling system, coolant temperature must be below 50 oC.
2 | Remove all drain plugs from engine block (2) and radiator (4) and drain engine coolant. | If vehicle is equipped with heating system, adjust heating control to "open". After complete coolant draining, replace engine block and radiator drain plugs. Discard coolant ecologically.
Degreasing | |||
3 | Fill the cooling system completely with degreasing solution. | Degreasing solution: Clean water and 5% degreasing agent (50 g degreasing agent plus 950 g of water per liter).
Do not use soda (sodium hydroxide) or any other highly alkaline substance. These products will corrode aluminum components in the cooling system.
Danger! | Risk of personal and material damage when starting the engine with the transmission in gear. Personal risk while working on a hot and running engine. | Always make sure that the transmission is in neutral. Wear adequate clothing and beware of hot and moving engine components.
4 | Run engine at moderate engine speed to reach working temperature and maintain working temperature for 20 minutes. | If necessary, cover the radiator to control the required temperature.
5 | Remove all drain plugs from engine block (2) and radiator (4) and drain the degreasing solution. | Stop engine before draining and wait for temperature to drop to 50 oC. After complete draining of the solution, replace all drain plugs. Discard degreasing solution ecologically.
6 | Immediately refill cooling system with clean water and run engine to working temperature which is to be maintained for 5 minutes. | Stop engine and wait for temperature do drop to 50 oC. Drain cooling system again, refill with clean water and run engine at working temperature for another 5 minutes.
7 | Stop engine and drain cooling system completely. | Drain cooling system as soon as temperature drops to less than 50 oC. Replace all drain plugs.
Descaling and chemical stripping
8 | Fill cooling system with descaling/chemical stripping solution. | Descaling solution: Clean water and 10% citric acid (100 cc citric acid plus 900 g of water per liter).
9 | Run engine to reach working temperature and maintain working temperature for 5 minutes. | If necessary, cover the radiator to control the required temperature.
10 | Remove all drain plugs from engine block (2) and radiator (4) and drain the solution. | Stop engine before draining and wait for temperature to drop to 50 oC. After complete draining of the solution, replace all drain plugs. Discard the solution ecologically.
11 | Refill cooling system with clean water and run engine to working temperature which is to be maintained for 5 minutes. | Stop engine and wait for temperature do drop to 50 oC and drain the system. This operation (11) is to be performed three times.
