ENGINE 457 in MODEL 613, 671

1. Turbocharger

After replacing the turbocharger the intake air side and the charge air pipes have not been checked or cleaned.

In the event of turbocharger damage due to foreign objects or turbocharger damage with broken turbine wheels the intake air side upstream of the turbocharger and the charge air pipes with air cooler should be checked for cleanliness.

If necessary, remove and clean the charge air cooler.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Charge air cooler

Oil mist deposits in the charge air system are not necessarily attributable to turbocharger damage.

Normal oil mist development in the charge air system does not damage the engine. A certain oil quantity is required for lubricating the intake valves.

In the process the oil quantity escaping is so small that a measurable influence on the oil consumption of the engine does not arise.

A completely dry charge air system does not exist. The turbochargers used have an oil-guiding bearing housing with piston rings as a seal of the rotor shaft to the turbine housing and compressor housing. The function of this sealing is based on the pressure prevailing in the compressor housing. However at increased idle speed or in the overrun mode vacuum can occur which favors oil escape.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If heavier deposits of oil are found in the turbocharger compressor housing, in the charge air manifolds or in the charge air cooler, an especially careful check must be carried out.

- Check crankcase ventilation/oil separator

- Check oil pressure line for damage and flow

If flow is not possible, the oil level increases in the turbocharger-bearing housing and oil reaches the turbine housing and compressor housing via the seals. In the event of damage the oil return line must be replaced.

Check axial play and radial play at the rotor shaft. If the test values are outside the tolerance, the turbocharger should be replaced.
