MODEL 169.### 1#
MODEL 245.### 1#
During investigations we have found that separation of the steering coupling is frequently carried out improperly. We therefore inform you again about the correct procedure when separating the steering coupling of the electromechanical power steering.
To detect the manual torque introduced at the steering wheel, two electrical torque sensors ("TS" = Torque Sensor) are located on the input shaft of the steering. They are extremely sensitive with regard to forces (kickback) which act on the input shaft. In the event of the relevant damage it is no longer possible to calibrate the torque sensor with DAS [Diagnosis Assistance System].
In the one direction the steering acts in an excessively assisted manner and in the other direction in a sluggish manner.
After loosening and pulling out the bolt of the steering coupling the steering coupling may only separated and connected again with the force of the hand.
During all work in which the input shaft of the electromagnetic power steering (EPS) is separated from the lower steering coupling, it is therefore essential to proceed as per
AR46.10-P-8000-01AK "Separate and connect steering coupling". Should the connection not be detachable, the longitudinal slot can be enlarged (see picture, shown on model 245).
If enlarging is not the remedy, the steering shaft must be cut through. In the process proceed as per the document
AR46.10-P-8000-01AL "Separate and connect steering coupling" and replace the steering shaft.
After the investigation we reserve the right, if necessary, to reject steering gears on which it was proved that the torque sensor was incorrectly adjusted.
