Location

The multifunction steering wheel is located on the driver side and is bolted to the steering column.

Task

The multifunction steering wheel serves for increasing the active driving safety in road traffic in combination with the instrument cluster (A1). While operating the various vehicle systems, (e.g. radio and telephone), the driver can at the same time concentrate on the traffic without distraction.

The requests made via the multifunction steering wheel button group are read in by the steering column tube module (N80) and transmitted via engine compartment CAN and interior CAN to the corresponding control units. The symbol illumination of the multifunction steering wheel button group is also actuated via the steering column tube module.

The communication between the multifunction steering wheel and the steering column tube module takes place voltage-coded or via the local interconnect network (LIN) (with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles).

In vehicles with code (428) Steering wheel shift paddles, the forward gears in manual transmission mode "M" can be engaged directly using the steering wheel gear shifter MINUS and the steering wheel gear shifter PLUS. The steering column tube module reads in the particular status of the steering wheel gear shifter via LIN and transmits it via engine compartment CAN to the electronic transmission control control unit (N15/3) (with transmission 722.6) or to the fully integrated transmission control unit (VGS) (Y3/8n4) (with transmission 722.9).

Shift operations that would lead to impermissibly high or low motor speeds are not carried out.
