Location
The distance sensors are installed in the front and rear bumpers.
Task
The distance sensors record the distance between the vehicle and an obstacle. The data of the distance sensors are read in directly by the parking system control unit (N62).
To implement the functions, the distance sensors are actuated by the parking system control unit. The distance sensors then emit an ultrasonic signal and, after a short "dead time" (time for the decay of the diaphragm), they are ready to receive. The lower limit of the monitoring range results from the technically inherent "dead time" of each distance sensor. Every distance sensor receives the echoes of its own ultrasound signals (direct echoes) as well as the echoes of the ultrasound signals from adjacent distance sensors (cross echoes). The distance to the obstacle is calculated from the run times of the direct echoes. The position of the object is calculated from the cross echo.
Structure
The detection ranges of the distance sensors are of a club-shaped design with angular coverages of approx. 120° horizontal and approx. 60° vertical. The outer left front and outer right front distance sensors have a smaller detection angle and a range of approx. 400 to 450 cm. The geometry of the detection lobes can change depending the on environmental influences (e.g. rain, snow, air humidity, extreme temperatures of, for example, 40 °C or +85 °C, air pressure, engine heat).
