Removing

Remove differential assembly.

Remove locking plates (2) of threaded rings (5)

Remove roll pins for retaining the threaded rings (5)

Rear axle HOSE with drum brake

Remove retaining wire for mounting screws of bearing cap (4)

Rear axle HOSE with drum brake

Loosen threaded rings (5)

 Loosen threaded rings (5) just enough to release the tension on the bearing assembly.



Mark bearing cap (4) relative to rear axle housing

Remove both bearing caps (4)

Place match marks on ring gear and drive gear

Place match marks on each outer race and associated tapered roller bearing

Lift ring gear with differential (7) off rear axle housing (6) and remove outer races of tapered roller bearings (8)

Remove threaded rings (5)



Install

Slide outer races (8) onto tapered roller bearings (9)

 If the tapered roller bearings were not replaced with new ones, observe the markings on the outer races (8) and the tapered roller bearings (9).

Insert ring gear with differential (7) into the rear axle housing (6)



- The differential/ring gear axis must be horizontal.

- Observe markings of ring gear and drive gear (so that the same pairs of teeth are engaged with each other again).

Insert threaded rings (5) into threads of rear axle housing (6) to create a positive connection

Using a plastic mallet, tap both bearing caps (4) lightly into place and insert mounting bolts (3)

 Observe marking of bearing caps (4) relative to the rear axle housing.

Slightly tighten mounting bolts (3) of bearing caps

Fully tighten mounting bolts (3) of bearing caps (4)

Screw in threaded rings (5) until they contact outer races (8) of tapered roller bearings (9)

 While doing so, rotate ring gear and apply light strikes with a rubber hammer to the differential housing. This centers the tapered roller bearings.

Adjust gear backlash at differential assembly
