Warning | Risk of injury. Skin or eye injuries may result when handling hot or glowing objects. | Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses, if necessary.
Caution | Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from skin and eye contact with brake fluid | Only pour brake fluid into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling brake fluid.
Topical note | Notes on repairs to brake system
Topical note | Brake fluid notes
| Clean | ||
1 | Clean the area around the cap of the brake fluid reservoir | Assembly cleaner
| Remove/install | ||
2 | Unscrew cap of brake fluid reservoir and extract some brake fluid | This prevents the brake fluid reservoir overflowing when the brake piston is pushed back.
3 | Remove corresponding rear wheel
| Model 207 | ||
| Model 212 (except 212.074/075/076/077/092/274/275/276/277/292) | ||
4 | Detach spring (1) from brake caliper (2)
5 | Disconnect electrical connector of right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4x1)
Notes on installing brake wear indicator contact sensors
Only fitted on the right-hand side.
6 | Pry cap (3) off upper boot (4) and remove
7 | Unscrew guide pins (5) | Guide pin to brake caliper support or bolt for guide pin to brake caliper
8 | Remove brake caliper (2) from brake caliper support (8)
9 | Remove brakepads (6) | Installation: Insert the inner brake lining (6) with riveted-on spring into the brake piston. Push outer brakepad (6) into brake caliper support (8) and attach brake caliper (2).
Only sets of brake pads (6) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
Installation: Do not apply brake paste or lubricants to the brakepads (6) and brake calipers (2)!
Brake pads (6) must be disposed of as special waste. The local authorities can provide information regarding whether disposal is also permitted as industrial waste similar to domestic waste.
10 | Press back brake piston using pusher tool (01) | Resetting device
For a sluggish brake piston
| |||
replace brake caliper (2).
11 | Pull right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4) out of backing plate of brakepads (6) | When replacing the brakepads (6) or the right rear brake wear sensor (S10/4).
Installation: Replace defective right rear brake lining wear sensor (S10/4).
| Check | ||
12 | Check brake pads (6) for condition and wear
| Model 207 | ||
| Model 212 (except 212.074/075/076/077/092/274/275/276/277/292) | ||
In event of damage or excessive wear
| |||
Install new brake disks (9).
Only sets of brake disks (9) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
13 | Check brake disk (9) for wear and that it is in good condition
| Model 207 | ||
In event of damage or excessive wear
| |||
Install new brake disks (9).
Only sets of brake disks (9) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed.
14 | Check brake caliper (2) for leaks and dust boot (10) for damage | Replace brake caliper (2) if necessary.
15 | Check spring (1) for deformation | Replace spring (1) if necessary.
| Clean | ||
16 | Clean contact surfaces of brakepads (6) on brake caliper (2)
Assembly cleaner | |||
17 | Install in the reverse order
Danger | Risk of accident when commissioning the vehicle due to a lack of braking effect when the service brake is operated for the first time after repair work. | Before starting the engine, actuate brake pedal several times until pressure is built up and maintained in the brake system.
18 | Depress brake pedal several times until brake linings (6) make contact with brake disks (9) | Firm resistance should be noticeable at the brake pedal.
| Check | ||
19 | Check and correct fluid level in brake fluid expansion reservoir
| |||
Danger | Risk of death caused by limbs being caught or crushed by rotating parts when performing tests on the brake test stand | Never leave the vehicle unattended on the rollers except in an emergency. Ensure that no one is under the vehicle or near rotating parts during testing. In case of emergency, use the EMERGENCY OFF switch to shut down test stand.
20 | Carry out brake test on the test stand
