| Remove/install | ||
| Remove viscous fan clutch
| Remove the right cylinder head cover | Only if right camshaft sprocket (right) (4) is removed.
| Remove left cylinder head cover | Only when removing camshaft sprocket (left) (5).
| Attach hold-down device (9) to middle camshaft bearing on relevant cylinder head | Hold-down devices (9) assume function of camshaft bearings and relieve the load on camshaft brackets (10).
| |||
| Set piston of cylinder 1 to ignition TDC | Turn engine at vibration damper (7) in direction of engine rotation until markings (8) on camshafts (1) stand opposite each other and markings (3), seen in the direction of travel, is aligned on left side to upper edge of right or left cylinder head. The TDC marking (arrow) on vibration damper (7) must be aligned with stay on timing case cover (6).
Installation: If markings (8) on camshafts (1) or top dead center marking (arrow) on vibration damper (7) does not coincide with stay on timing case cover (6), relay the timing chain (14).
| Turn engine on vibration damper (7) in direction of engine rotation until bolt (11) is accessible | Bolt (11) is the lower bolt for the piston on cylinder 1 being at ignition TDC.
| Remove bolt (11) | | |
| Set piston of cylinder 1 to ignition TDC | Turn engine at vibration damper (7) in direction of engine rotation until markings (8) on camshafts (1) stand opposite each other and markings (3), seen in the direction of travel, are aligned on the left side to the upper edge of the cylinder head. The TDC marking (arrow) on vibration damper (7) must be aligned with stay on timing case cover (6).
| Fix timing chain (14) on place using cable tie | Only if camshaft sprocket (4, 5) is detached from camshaft (1) and is not removed.
| Remove chain tensioner (2)
| Remove bolts (12) | In order to achieve the basic position of camshafts (1) the engine must not be turned during removal of bolts (12).
| |||
| Remove drive (13) from camshaft sprocket (4) | Only if camshaft sprocket (4) is removed.
| Mark position of timing chain (14) relative to camshaft sprocket (4, 5) to be removed
| Remove camshaft sprocket (4, 5) to be removed from camshaft (1)
| Fix cable tie to timing chain (14), lead camshaft sprocket (4, 5) to be removed out of timing chain (14) and lower timing chain (14) with cable tie into timing chain chamber
| Install in the reverse order |
