Remove

Remove cylinder head

Inspect

Remove gasket residues, if present, on the plane faces of the cylinder head

Inspect cylinder head sealing surface (1) for flatness, cracks and shrink holes

 Inspect flatness of cylinder head sealing surface over entire length and diagonally with knife-edge straightedge  (2).

If the inspection is carried out in the transverse direction, the permissible variation stated is merely a reference value and cannot be measured.

If a light gap is recognizable and if the stated dimension is thus exceeded, the cylinder head must be faced.

Measuring

Measure height (H) of cylinder head

Parallelism, minimum height

 If the stated dimension is exceeded, the cylinder head must be faced.

 Check whether a stock removal down to the minimum height is still possible.

If the minimum height of the cylinder head is already achieved or if the height is below this, no further stock removal is possible, and the cylinder head must be replaced.

Dismantling

Remove valves

 If sealing surface of cylinder head has to be machined.

Remove injection nozzle with nozzle holder

 If sealing surface of cylinder head has to be machined.

Machine cylinder head sealing surface

Permissible peak-to-valley height, minimum height

 Only if sealing surface of cylinder head has to be machined.

 Clean any soiling and swarf off cylinder head after machining.

Assembling

Install valves

 If the valves have been removed.

Install injection nozzle together with nozzle holder

 If injection nozzle and nozzle holder have been removed.

Measuring

Measure projection of injection nozzles

 If the measurement obtained is not within the tolerance, this must be corrected by inserting nozzle disks of appropriate thickness.
