This service information bulletin provides information on the use of engine oils on EURO4 (BlueTec 4) and EURO5 (BlueTec 5) vehicles in order to clear up any misunderstandings.
On vehicles with this emissions standard without diesel particulate filter, engine oils as per MB-Specifications for Operating Fluids sheet no. 228.3/.5/.51 (multigrade oil) can be used.
Engine oils as per sheet no. 228.5. are recommended.
For vehicles with this emissions standard and diesel particulate filter, only low SPAsh engine oils as per MB-Specifications for Operating Fluids sheet no. 228.51 may be used.
Engine oils as per sheet no. 228.51 are low SPAsh engine oils, which provide the diesel particulate filter with longer-lasting protection against clogging with ash because they produce less sulfated ash compared to standard engine oils.
Standard engine oils as per sheet 228.3/.5 should only be used in exceptional cases where no engine oil as per sheet no. 228.51 is available. If these engine oils are used, the service life of the diesel particulate filter is reduced.
