Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.

Remove bolts (4) and remove reinforcement bridge



Remove bolts (2) and nuts (3) and remove exhaust shielding plate

 On vehicles with engine 642, 2 extra bolts must also be undone. The bolts are located where the left center muffler is mounted to the exhaust shielding plate on vehicles with gasoline engine.

Make marking (9) between propeller shaft and (8) flexible coupling

 Make colored markings to indicate position of propeller shaft relative to flexible coupling so that ex-factory installation position can be reproduced on reinstallation, otherwise drive train vibrations can occur.

Make marking between propeller shaft (8) and output flange to rear axle on transfer case

 Make colored markings to indicate position of propeller shaft relative to transfer case so that ex-factory installation position can be reproduced on reinstallation, otherwise drive train vibrations can occur.

Remove bolts (6) of propeller shaft (8) on transfer case

 Installation: Observe tightening procedure for rear propeller shaft to transfer case.

 Vehicles with engine 156: Remove bolts from vibration damper on transfer case, then push the vibration damper over the propeller shaft (8).



Unscrew bolted connections (7) for propeller shaft to flexible coupling

 The flexible coupling remains on the rear axle differential.



Remove bolts (5) on the propeller shaft center support bearing and remove the propeller shaft (8) forwards

 Secure propeller shaft (8) and vibration damper to prevent them from falling down.

 Do not kink propeller shaft otherwise the sealing boot on the propeller shaft center support bearing will be damaged.



Checking

Check flexible coupling of propeller shaft (8) for signs of wear and replace where necessary

 To replace the flexible coupling, the bolted connection of the flexible coupling on the rear axle differential must be undone.



Install in the reverse order

 Danger!

Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

 If necessary, relieve exhaust system.
