General function
The electric vehicle is equipped with a control and display concept adapted for the electric drive. The instrument cluster (A1) informs the driver about all dynamic and static driving conditions, as well as the current condition of systems installed in the vehicle. In the event of faulty vehicle functions or functions relevant to safety, corresponding warnings are issued via the instrument cluster.
To convey the information to the driver the instrument cluster is equipped with the following displays:
Permanent displays (e. g. speed, power availability display, charge level of high-voltage batteries in %)
Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue) (e.g. turn signals, high beams)
Warning lamps (red)(e.g. high-voltage battery warning, regenerative brake system fault)
Multifunction display (e.g. status displays, odometer, menu sequence)
The instrument cluster has two large analog displays and two displays:
Speedometer on the left side
POWER display on right side
Multifunction display in bottom center
Display, warning and indicator lamps in the top center
POWER display
In the POWER display on the right side, the currently called up electric power or the current recuperation is shown.
The basic position of the pointer in the POWER display after the system start is the "0" between "Charge" and "Economy".
The POWER display is divided into "Charge", "Economy" and "Boost".
"Charge"
In the "Charge area", the recuperated output of the vehicle during recuperation is shown. The further that the pointer moves to the left, the more energy that has been gained back.
"Economy" and "Boost"
In the areas "Economy" or "Boost", the current output is shown that the drive system is outputting to the wheels. The further that the pointer moves to the right, the more energy that is being consumed.
If the pointer of the POWER display is in the position "OFF", the vehicle is not ready for operation for the following reasons:
The drive system has not been started yet.
The charging cable is still connected to the vehicle socket.
There is insufficient output available from the high-voltage batteries.
There is a fault in the high-voltage on-board electrical system.
If the drive system is started, the pointer of the POWER display goes to the position "0". In the multifunction display, the "READY" display appears. The vehicle is ready for operation.

Depending on the vehicle equipment, the following information and more is shown on the multifunction display:
"READY" indicator (vehicle ready to drive)
Status display of transmission position and recuperation level
Display of drive programs
State of charge of high-voltage batteries
Display messages, menus and menu line
Display of outside temperature, time, and travel distance

Instrument cluster Function
The instrument cluster makes the following functions possible:
Activate instrument cluster.
Operation
Indicator and warning lamp test
Control and warning messages
Display operating states.
Comfort displays
Activate instrument cluster
The instrument cluster's multifunction display is activated by:
Unlocking the vehicle through radio frequency
Driver door opened
Changing the status of circuit 15
After bus idle, the instrument cluster remains active for 30 s. In a fault is present, this time is increased to 120 s.
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit (N73/8) sends the status of circuit 15 to the instrument cluster.
Operation
The menus are navigated using the buttons (A1s1 up to A1s3) on the instrument cluster.
Confirm the selected menu item using the "Confirm" button (A1s4).
Indicator and warning lamp test
The indicator and warning lamp test is executed automatically every time circuit 15 is switched on.
All indicator and warning lamps, excluding the indicator lamps for exterior lighting and the turn signal light, are actuated for this.
The electronic ignition lock (EZS) control unit sends the status of circuit 15 to the instrument cluster.
The indicator lamp tests end once the vehicle is started.
Control and warning messages
The instrument cluster informs the driver about the functionality and status of the installed vehicle systems.
Safety-relevant system activities and system malfunctions are shown to the driver in the form of control and warning messages in the instrument cluster.
The following display options are provided for this purpose:
Indicator lamps (green, yellow or blue)
Warning lamps (red)
Display, warning and control messages
Requests of control and warning messages to the instrument cluster are sent via the powertrain control unit or the electronic ignition lock control unit (EZS).
Display operating conditions
The operating conditions display provides the driver with permanent information about the current operating conditions of the vehicle.
The "display operating conditions" function comprises the following subfunctions:
Display of vehicle speed
Display of travel distance
Display of available output
Display of remaining range
Display of drive range and recuperation level
Display of charge level
Display of vehicle speed
The ESP® control unit (N30/4) calculates the vehicle speed from the wheel speeds and sends the calculated vehicle speed to the instrument cluster.
Display of travel distance
The instrument cluster calculates the traveled distance from the wheel speeds, taking the tire circumference into consideration.
The tire size is coded via the vehicle diagnosis system.
The total distance is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The maximum displayed counter reading of the main odometer reading is 9.999.999. It then changes back to "0". However, the actual kilometer reading continues to count and is stored continuously in the instrument cluster's nonvolatile memory. This memory ensures that the counter reading is retained for at least 5 years, even when the on-board electrical system battery (G1) is disconnected.
The trip distance is displayed in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The maximum displayed counter reading of the trip distance is 9999.9. If this value is reached, the figure returns to "0". The current trip distance is also stored in the instrument cluster's nonvolatile memory.
The instrument cluster compares this with the internally stored speedometer characteristic and actuates the speedometer (A1p8) accordingly by means of a stepper motor.
Display of available output
The three shown bars (segment steps: 1 to 3 bars) of the power availability display (12) in the multifunction display show the current available output of the drive system. With three bars, the vehicle can be heated, air-conditioned and accelerated at full power. If only one bar is shown, solely a reduced output is available for the consumers. Under normal operating conditions, the power availability display shows all three bars.
The following cases are exceptions in which the available output can be impaired:
Low charge level of high-voltage batteries (message is displayed in the instrument cluster)
Component part protection (example: torque limitation due to high temperature)
Malfunction in drive system
Extreme outside temperatures
Display of remaining range
The estimated remaining range is calculated from the ratio between the current charge level of the high-voltage batteries and the average energy consumption.
The remaining range is shown at the bottom right on the multifunction display.
Display of drive range and recuperation level
Drive range and recuperation information is shown in the drive range/recuperation level display in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
The drive range (P, R, N, D) is selected using the selector lever.
The recuperation level ("D-", "D", "D+", "D++") is selected using the following gearshift paddles on the steering wheel:
Recuperation level pushbutton switch (+) (S109)
Recuperation level pushbutton switch (-) (S108)
Further information is available in the separate function description "Recuperation function".
Display of charge level
The charge level display shows the high-voltage battery charge in the form of a horizontal bar at the bottom in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster. The remaining range is also displayed alongside.
The state of charge of the high-voltage batteries in % can be seen in the standard display in the Trip menu.
Information on the state of charge of the high-voltage batteries is provided by the battery management system control unit (N82/2). The powertrain control unit forwards this information to the instrument cluster.
Comfort displays
The convenience displays consist of the following functions:
Display of outside temperature
Display of time
Trip computer (TRIP) display
Additional functions
Display of outside temperature
The outside temperature is detected by the outside temperature sensor (B14).
The SAM control unit directly reads in signals from the outside temperature sensor, calculates the outside temperature and sends this to the instrument cluster. The outside temperature is displayed in the multifunction display in °C or °F to match the country specification.
In order to be able to show the actual outside temperature, the following parameters must also be considered:
Vehicle speed (falsification of value through air stream)
If the vehicle is stationary, the measured temperature can differ considerably from the outside temperature. The outside temperature is therefore only included in the regulation process when the vehicle speed - for a period of at least 30 s is 30 km/h. At speeds lower than 30 km/h and when the ignition is being switched on and off, the last measured temperature value is used.
Display of time
The time is displayed in the digital clock in the multifunction display of the instrument cluster.
The time can be set in the corresponding menu using the buttons of the instrument cluster.
Trip computer (TRIP) display
TRIP displays are selected using the buttons of the instrument cluster.
TRIP provides data and information on average energy consumption, average speed and driving time.
Additional functions
ASSYST PLUS system information, for example, can be called up via the menu using the instrument cluster buttons.
