Inspect coolant pump for leaktightness

Removing

 Danger!

Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.

Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Remove maintenance flap

Turn cooling system cap (1) on engine radiator (2) a half turn counterclockwise, relieve the pressure and then unscrew the cooling system cap (1)



Checking

Check coolant level and antifreeze content in the expansion reservoir (2)

 If the antifreeze content of the coolant is inadequate, either antifreeze must be topped up, or the coolant must be replaced, see: 

Danger!

Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off the lifting platform.

Align vehicle between columns of vehicle lift and position four support plates at vehicle lift support points specified by vehicle manufacturer.

Raise vehicle with vehicle lift

Remove poly-V belt cover

Check engine and coolant pump (3) for leaks by means of a visual inspection

 The engine and coolant pump (3) must be dry before the actual test.

Lower vehicle with vehicle lift

Attach pressure pump on expansion reservoir (2)



Connect exhaust extraction system

 Danger!

Risk of accident caused by vehicle starting off by itself when engine is running. Risk of injury caused by contusions and burns during starting procedure or when working near the engine as it is running

Secure vehicle to prevent it from moving by itself.
Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes.
Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Start engine and allow to idle

Apply a pressure of a max of 1.6 bar to the cooling system using the pressure pump on the expansion reservoir (2)

For a new cylinder head gasket bring engine up to operating temperature beforehand and allow to run in a warm operating condition while idling for 5 minutes then check cooling system for leaks.



Raise vehicle with vehicle lift

Check condition and seating of hose clamps; retighten or replace if necessary

Inspect cooling and heating hoses as well as their connection points for proper condition and coolant loss, replace coolant hoses if necessary

Check coolant pump (3) for leaks

 Existing, dried traces of coolant are produced as a function of the process and are permissible.

Building of moisture or formation of drops in the area of the bearing ventilation (arrows) during the five-minute idle running are not permissible. The coolant pump (3) must be replaced, see: 
