Danger ! | Risk of explosion from explosive gas. Risk of poisoning and caustic burns from swallowing battery electrolyte. Risk of injury through burns to skin and eyes from battery acid or when handling damaged lead-acid batteries | No fires, sparks, open flames or smoking. Wear acid-resistant gloves, clothing and glasses. Only pour battery acid into suitable and appropriately marked containers.
Danger ! | Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running. | Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.
| Check | ||
1 | Check battery | ||
| Notes on battery | ||
2 | Check that high-voltage connection 30 at the fuse box, starter, alternator and battery are in tight seating and in a proper state
3 | Check that battery ground line and ground connections between the engine, transmission and body are secure and in a proper state
4 | Check condition of poly-V belt
5 | Start engine | ||
6 | Check charge indicator in instrument cluster | In case of correct charging voltage, no fault message is shown in the display on the instrument cluster.
7 | Turn off engine | ||
8 | Connect up multimeter (1) according to connection diagram
| 000 588 06 19 00 Measuring instrument | ||
9 | Start engine | ||
10 | Check charge indicator with engine idling and when engine speed increased (up to 3000 rpm) | In case of correct charging voltage, no fault message is shown in the display on the instrument cluster.
11 | Check charging voltage with multimeter (1)
| 000 588 06 19 00 Measuring instrument | ||
Only apply load to battery for the vehicle's own consumer (e.g. lighting). If the charging voltage is less than 13.0 V, remove all transition resistances at the electrical connections of the charging system.
Regulation voltage (at battery)
If the charging voltage is above 14.5 V or is still below 13.0 V following elimination of all transition resistances, then the alternator must be replaced:
