Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.

Remove/install

Remove exhaust gas turbocharger with exhaust manifold.

 Installation: Only install upper engine cover after the leak test.

Remove camshafts.

 Installation: Only install lower engine compartment paneling after leak test.

Remove screw (1).

 Bolt, coolant hose to cylinder head/crankcase

Remove bolts (5).

 Bolt, coolant line to coolant thermostat/coolant line holder

Pull coolant pipe (6) out of the cylinder head (3) and place to one side.

 Catch escaping coolant with a suitable container.

Remove cylinder head bolts (4) contrary to the tightening procedure.

 Installation: Install new cylinder head bolts (4) and screw in and tighten according to the tightening sequence.

Remove cylinder head (3) from crankcase.

 Installation: Aid of helper required.

Remove cylinder head gasket.

 Installation: Replace cylinder head gasket.



Clean

Clean sealing surfaces on cylinder head (3) and crankcase.

Do not use any sharp-edged tools or abrasive paper.
Otherwise, damage to the sealing surfaces or engine damage will occur.

Cover threaded holes of the cylinder head bolts (4) in the crankcase with rags and blow out with compressed air.



Check

Check sealing surfaces of the cylinder head (3) and on the crankcase for cracks and unevenness.


Do not rework cylinder head (3) and crankcase (surface grinding).
The permissible production tolerances will otherwise be exceeded.

 Tightening the cylinder head bolts (4) compensates for a slight distortion of the cylinder head (3) in the longitudinal or transverse direction.

If cracks or unevenness are present,



Replace cylinder head (3) or crankcase.

Check valves and valve seats for wear and damage.

If there are problems,



replace valves and cylinder head (3).

Install in the reverse order.

Concluding tasks

Change engine oil and oil filter element.



Perform engine test run. While doing so, check engine for proper operation and leak tightness.

Install lower engine compartment lining.
