Detach screw clamp (2) and remove air intake pipe for resonator (3) on turbocharger (4)

Remove oil return line on turbocharger (4)

Remove oil feed line on turbocharger (4)

Remove bolts for exhaust gas recirculation pipe (5) on exhaust gas recirculation cooler (6)

 Installation: Replace seal between exhaust gas recirculation pipe (5) and exhaust gas recirculation cooler (6).



Disconnect temperature sensor electrical connector upstream of diesel particulate filter and temperature sensor upstream of exhaust gas turbocharger from bracket (7)

On vehicles with code (474) Diesel particulate filter (closed)

Unclip vacuum hose on charge air cooler from bracket (7)

If installed.

Remove bolts for holder (7) on cylinder head (1) and remove holder (7)

On vehicles with engine 660.950

Remove poly-V belt for refrigerant compressor (A9)

Remove camshaft

Remove roller-type cam follower and cover cylinder head (1) with rags

 Observe correct installation position. Check roller-type cam follower for wear; replace if necessary.

Lower vehicle with vehicle lift

Remove rail

Disconnect cable tie (8) on wiring harness (9)

Unscrew bolt (arrow) from bracket (25)

Push cable duct (12) to one side, remove bolts (10) and lay bracket (11) with cable duct (12) to one side

Remove charge air manifold

Disconnect electrical connectors at the glow plugs (R9)

Remove bolts (26) for coolant thermostat (27) on cylinder head (1) and lay coolant thermostat (27) with attached coolant hoses to one side

 Installation: Replace seal on coolant thermostat (27).

Remove bolts (13) and remove holder (14) for charge pressure sensor (B5/1) from cylinder head (1)

Remove fuel injectors

Raise vehicle with vehicle lift

Position major assembly lifting platform with universal assembly mount below engine and transmission

Remove bolts (18) for engine support (19) on cylinder head (1)



Lower main assembly lifting table with universal main assembly mount until the bearing bolt (16) is accessible

Position socket (15) over bearing bolt (16) for tensioning rail. Screw in bolt (17) with a screwed on nut into the bearing bolt (16) and remove bearing bolt (16)

 Use socket (15) size 12 mm and bolt (17) M6 Turning the nut to the right causes the bearing bolt (16) to be pulled out of the cylinder head (1). Then remove bolt (17) with nut out of the bearing bolt (16) and remove bearing bolt (16).

 Installation: Screw bolt (17) into the bearing bolt (16) and hammer in bearing bolt (16) using a suitable tool all the way into the cylinder head (1).

Remove rags from cylinder head (1) and bolts (20, 21) on cylinder head (1) on timing case cover



Remove cylinder head bolts in reverse order of the tightening procedure

 Installation: Observe tightening procedure of cylinder head bolts.

Replace cylinder head bolts.

Take off cylinder head (1)

 Keep timing chain under tension.

An assistant for guiding the tensioning rail and slide rail is required.

Take cylinder head gasket (22) off crankcase (23)

 Installation: Clean sealing surfaces on cylinder head (1) and on cylinder crankcase (23); replace cylinder head gasket (22).

Remove valve clearance compensating element (24) from mounting holes in cylinder head (1)

When replacing the cylinder head (1).

 Installation: Wet valve clearance compensating element (24) with engine oil and insert into mounting holes in the cylinder head (1).

Remove turbocharger (4) on cylinder head (1)

When replacing the cylinder head (1).


