1 Selector lever

2 Shift-mode selector key (S3, with engine OM611) or shift-mode selector switch (S4, with engine M111)

When the selector lever (1) is activated the corresponding position of the shift shaft at the transmission is set via a Bowden cable. The position switch situated on the shift shaft passes the position of the shift shaft to the transmission control module (A4). The transmission control module (A4) determines the shift point according to the selected driving position and the shift-mode determined by the shift-mode selector switch (2).

7 positions can be selected with the selector lever. Additional shift-modes can be selected using the shift-mode selector switch.

Selector lever positions:

P Parking lock and starting position
In this position the transmission is in the neutral position. The parking lock is interlocked.

R Reverse gear

N Neutral
In this position the transmission is in the neutral position. The vehicle is not automatically safeguarded against rolling away.

D Upshifting to 4th gear

3 Upshifting to 3rd gear

2 Upshifting to 2nd gear

1 Driving in 1st gear only

Shift-mode selector switch (S4, with engines 111.948/950/978/980 and 601.970):

Economic The economic shift-mode is shifted if the shift-mode selector switch is in the middle position.
Gears are shifted at low engine speeds allowing an economic driving style.

Power (sport) The power shift-mode is shifted if the power side of the shift-mode selector switch is pressed.
Gears are shifted at high engine speeds and the engine power is used to the full.

Winter The winter shift-mode is shifted if the winter side of the shift-mode selector switch is pressed.
Apart from when the selector lever is in position 1, the car always begins moving in 2nd gear. This shift-mode is intended to facilitate starting in the case of traction problems (e.g. snow, black ice) as well as to determine the shift points according to these driving conditions.

 The vehicle may only be started in selector lever positions "P" and "N independent of the selected shift-mode.

Dynamic shift-mode:

The dynamic shift-mode is shifted if the shift-mode selector key is not in the Winter "W" position.
The dynamic shift-mode uses an adaptive transmission control. The driving style of the driver is assessed using the speed at which the driver presses the gas pedal and the frequency at which (s)he changes between the brake and gas pedal. The transmission control module selects the shift points accordingly.

Winter:

The winter program is shifted if the Winter ("W") side of the shift-mode selector key is pressed.
Apart from if the selector lever is in position 1, the vehicle always begins moving in 2nd gear.
This shift-mode is intended to facilitate starting in the case of traction problems (e.g. snow, black ice) as well as to determine the shift points according to these driving conditions.
