Risk of accident from vehicle starting off by itself when engine running. Risk of injury (bruises and burns) resulting from working on the engine while it is being started or when it is running.

Secure vehicle to prevent it from starting off by itself. Wear closed and snug-fitting work clothes. Do not touch hot or rotating parts.

Risk of injury to skin and eyes suffering scalding from contact with hot coolantspray. Risk of poisoning from swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90 °C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.
Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Drain off

Open engine hood and raise to vertical position

Unscrew cap on coolant expansion reservoir

Set temperature control for heater to the maximum heat output and switch on the ignition

Place drain hose on the drain fitting (3)

Unfasten drain screw (2) and drain off coolant at cooler

 Collect coolant in clean vessel.

Remove drain screw (4) on engine and drain coolant at crankcase

 Collect coolant in clean vessel.

7

Remove drain screw (6) on heat exchanger (7) and drain coolant

Only with vehicles with code BA1 (Performance-optimized Voith retarder).

 Collect coolant in clean vessel.

Switch off ignition

Pour in

Tighten drain screw (6) on heat exchanger (7)

Only with vehicles with code BA1 (Performance-optimized Voith retarder).

 Installation: Replace sealing ring and grease slightly.

Tighten drain screw (4) on crankcase

 Replace sealing ring.

 Coolant drain screw to crankcase

Tighten drain screw (2) on cooler and remove drain hose

 Coolant drain plug to radiator

Check coolant for soiling

If severely fouled.



Replace coolant.

Check coolant with antifreeze tester

When antifreeze protection is too low



Correct concentration of antifreeze or replace the coolant.

Pour in coolant

Start engine and bleed cooling and heating system

Turn off engine

Tight down cap on coolant expansion reservoir

Check engine cooling system for leaktightness

 Visual inspection.
