Remove/install compressor cylinder head

Removing

 Danger!

Risk of injury to skin and eyes caused by scalding from contact with hot coolant spray. Risk of poisoning caused by swallowing coolant.

Do not open cooling system unless coolant temperature is below 90°C. Open cap slowly and release the pressure. Do not pour coolant into beverage containers.

Wear protective gloves, protective clothing and safety glasses.

Notes on coolant

Prepare vehicle on pit or a suitable drive-on ramp-lift system

Open engine hood

Remove service cover

Partially drain coolant at radiator

Detach coolant lines (4, 7) at compressor (1)

 Collect coolant that flows out

Remove compressed air line (5) on compressor (1)

 Counterhold fitting (3).

Inspect compressed-air line (5) for carbon deposits

In the event of carbonization, also check compressed air lines between compressor (1), compressed air drier and the four-circuit protection valve, if necessary replace the carbonized parts.

Remove air intake line (6) on compressor (1)

Pull camshaft sensor (B16/1 or 12) out of the cylinder crankcase

 Do not disconnect electrical connector (8).

Remove cylinder head (2) at compressor (1)

Remove seal/suction valve disk (9)



Checking

Check piston and cylinder barrel on the compressor (1) for damage and wear

 If wear or damage present:



Replace compressor (1).

Check removed cylinder head (2) for leaks

 If leaks can be recognized on the cylinder head (2):



Disassemble cylinder head (2), insert new seals and assemble

Install

Lay on new seal/suction valve disk (9)

 Clean sealing surface.

Attach cylinder head (2) on compressor (1) and tighten screw/bolts (10) crosswise

 Replace screw/bolts (10).



Tighten screw/bolt (11)

 If cylinder head (2) has been replaced the screw/bolts (11) must be loosened before tightening since these have not yet been tightened according to specification in the delivery condition.

Leaks can occur otherwise.



Push in camshaft sensor (B16/1 or 12) all the way into the cylinder crankcase.

 Replace O-ring. Check bushing for camshaft sensor (B16/1 or 12); replace if necessary.

Attach air intake duct (6) on compressor (1)

Attach compressed-air line (5) to compressor (1)

 Counterhold fitting (3).



Pour in coolant

Start engine and check the connecting points and line separating points on the compressor (1) for leaktightness for a running engine

 Carry out visual inspection.

Turn off engine

Install service cover
