Timing chain drive
1 Camshafts
2 Upper chain tensioner
3 Intermediate shaft
4 Lower chain tensioner
5 Crankshaft
Controlling the engine takes place via two chain drives which are located on the flywheel side.
Starting from the crankshaft (5), the lower chain drive drives the intermediate shaft (3) and the sprocket for the upper chain drive. The camshafts (1) are driven by the upper chain drive via the intermediate shaft (3).
The step-down ratio between the crankshaft and camshaft is 2:1.
The drive for the oil pump also occurs via the intermediate shaft.
The chain tension is secured via two maintenance free chain tensioners (2, 4).
Both chain tensioners (2, 4) are attached to the pressurized circuit for engine lubrication.
Location of the upper chain tensioner
The upper chain tensioner (2) is screwed at the side into the upper timing case cover and connected by means of the upper tensioning rail.
Location of the lower chain tensioner
The lower chain tensioner (4) is screwed within the timing case onto the cylinder crankcase and connected with the lower tensioning rail.

Structure of the upper chain tensioner
1 Spring
2 Pressure cylinder
3 Ball
4 Spring
Actuation of the upper chain tensioner takes place hydraulically via the engine lubrication, supported by the spring (1) which holds the pressure cylinder (2) under tension.
The ball (3) acting together with the spring (4) prevents reverse flow of engine oil when the engine is switched off.
S05.10-2502-01
Structure of the lower chain tensioner
1 Spring
2 Lock
The tensioning force of the lower chain tensioner is determined by the spring force of the spring (1). Together with the oil pressure, the spring prevents vibration of the chain during operation.
The lock (2) ensures the basic setting of the chain at engine start.
