Removal

1

Remove steering gear

Clean outside of removed steering gear

AR46.20-I-0500A

2

Unscrew oil drain screw (1)

Drain steering gear oil and collect in suitable container.

Dismantling

3

Clamp steering gear in vice

Use aluminum protective jaws.

4

Measure main shaft gear backlash (and pretension)

Measure with steering shaft installed. The rotating resistance of the main shaft is used to measure the gear backlash between the steering sector and steering nut and the pretension of the ball bearings.

- Attach torque wrench (4) to main shaft using suitable socket (5).

- Rotate main shaft using torque wrench (4).

- Read off and note the value of the torque required to this.

5

Screw down the locking nut on the adjusting screw (2)

6

Unscrew three attachment screws from the side cover (3)

7

Remove adjusting screw (2), adjusting plate (8) and side cover (3)

Dismantling:

- Turn adjusting screw (2) clockwise using a screwdriver,

- Hold the side cover (3) at the same time (so that it cannot turn) and unscrew the remaining attachment screws in the side cover (3),

- Remove side cover (3) and

- Remove adjusting screw (2) and adjusting plate (8) from the T-shaped groove in the steering shaft (9).

8

Remove steering shaft (9) from steering gear housing

To do this, turn steering shaft (9) so that steering sector fits through the opening in the steering gear housing (center position).

Ensure that the radial sealing ring in the steering gear housing and the steering sector teeth are not damaged.

9

Measure main shaft pretension

Measure with steering shaft removed. The rotating resistance of the main shaft is used to measure the pretension of the ball bearings.

- Attach torque wrench (4) to main shaft using suitable socket (5).

- Rotate main shaft using torque wrench (4).

- Read off and note the value of the torque required to this.

10

Remove bottom cover (6) from steering gear housing

- Clean shims, measure and note thickness and number of shims.

- When removing the bottom cover, ensure that the inner ring and the ball bearing ball ring do not fall out.

11

Remove main shaft (in assembled condition) from steering gear housing

Inner ring and second ball bearing ring remain on the main shaft.

Assembly

12

Insert main shaft into steering gear housing (in assembled condition)

Screw steering nut onto bottom end of main shaft.

13

Attach lower cover (6) to steering gear housing

- Place lower cover (6) onto steering gear housing.

- Measure play between lower cover (6) and steering gear housing using feeler gauge (7).

- Use appropriate number and thickness of shims so that total thickness corresponds with measured amount of play.

- Screw in the attachment screws, nut do not tighten.

14

Measure main shaft pretension

Measure with steering shaft removed.

A Measure pretension in same way as when dismantling.

Tighten bottom cover attachment screws until values for

- Ball bearing pretension and

- Attachment screw tightening torque

are within the specified range.

B If both values have been achieved:

- Remove bottom cover (6) again,

- Apply sealant to both sides of the block of shims, place bottom cover (6) onto steering gear housing and

- Repeat the entire procedure (A).

15

Insert adjusting screw (2), adjusting plate (8) into steering shaft (9)

Pay attention to prescribed maximum play between adjusting screw (2) and steering shaft (9).

*BE46.20-N-1002-01D

16

Insert steering shaft (9) into steering gear housing

To do this,

- Turn main shaft so that steering nut is in central position, and

- Turn steering shaft (9) until steering sector is in central position (also fits through opening in steering gear housing).

Ensure that the radial sealing ring in the steering gear housing and the steering sector teeth are not damaged.

17

Attach side cover (3)

To do this,

- Apply sealant to side cover (3) sealing surfaces.

- 'Unscrew' side panel (3) on adjusting screw (2) until flush with sealing surface of steering gear housing.

- Screw in the attachment screws.

Apply some liquid sealant to the threaded shaft (not over the entire length) of the two attachment screws 'nearest' to the main shaft.

18

Adjust main shaft gear backlash (and pretension)

Adjust with steering shaft removed.

- Attach torque wrench (4) to main shaft using suitable socket (5).

- Rotate main shaft using torque wrench (4).

- At the same time, adjust axial position of steering shaft (9) using adjusting screw (2) so that value when turning with torque wrench is within required range.

19

Screw locking nut onto adjusting screw (2)

Apply liquid sealant to inner thread and front of locking nut.
