Important information and preliminary measures
1 | In case there is no service pit, place the vehicle on a leveled place to work safely | The most appropriate place to carry out the armatures removal and installation work is a service ditch equipped with a lifting system.
The armatures keep the rear axles alignment relative to the front axle.
The left-hand and right-hand sides of the vehicle are determined to be the same sides of a person sitting in the driver's seat, in the position of vehicle operator.
Two longitudinal armatures - one fixed and one adjustable - are mounted on each rear axle.
2 | Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn off the main switch | Detach the battery negative lead releasing its end fastened to the chassis frame.
Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
3 | Lift the vehicle and support it on trestles conveniently placed under the side members, both in front of and behind the axles, on both sides of the vehicle, so you can remove the armatures | Do not lift the vehicle by supporting the jack at the center of the axles.
Greater care to lift the vehicle will have to be observed on a laden vehicle.
The vehicle must not be lifted on only one side with the opposite wheel remaining supported by the ground. The vehicle will have to be lifted equally on both sides.
Remove the armatures | |||
4 | If necessary, remove the wheels
Removing the wheels facilitates accessing the armature fastening point, but removing the armatures is also possible without removing the wheels.
5 | Unscrew the self-locking nuts (7), remove the flat washers (8) and the armature joint screws (6) and remove the adjustable (1) and fixed (2) armature, from both sides | Before disassembling the armatures, note and mark the original position of the screws and the respective nuts to mount them at the same positions.
6 | If necessary to disassemble the adjustable armatures, loosen the locking screw nuts (15), remove the locking screws (14) and unscrew the end pieces (12) from the central rod
| Check | ||
7 | Inspect the components | Check and replace the items below, if necessary:
| |||
The fixed armatures for damage or deformation.
The clamping bushing on adapters (eyelets) of the armatures (10), for damage or wear.
The adjustable armatures, for deformation of the central rods; the condition of the adjustable armature threaded end plays (12) and the condition of the threads.
Screws and nuts in general.
Armature mounting brackets.
Remove and install the armature sleeves
8 | Support the armature adapter (eyelet) (10) on a suitable device that corresponds to the dimensions of the joint tensioning bushings (11), to enable its removal | The procedures to remove and install the fixed armature bushings and the threaded end play (12) bushings of the adjustable armatures are similar.
The outer diameter of the metal portion of the bushing mounted on the armature adapter (eyelet) (10) is 85 mm.
9 | In a press and using a suitable turn handle or an iron bushing suitable to the size of the joint tensioning bushings (11), extract the bushing from the armature adapter (eyelet) (10). | The width of the inner metal bearing shell embedded in the rubber of the joint tensioning bushing (11) is greater than the width of the outer metal portion.
10 | Clean the bushing housing in the armature adapter (eyelet) (10), making sure it is fully clean, dry and free from any type of lubricant | Remove any existing burrs from the sharp edges of the housing or the sleeve.
11 | Using the same turn handle or bushing used when removing, install the new joint tensioning sleeve (11) in the armature (10) adapter (eyelet), pressing the bushing until it is centered in the housing, showing the same measure "B" on both sides of the armature adapter (eyelet) (10) | The bushing installation procedure is similar for both the fixed arms and the threaded end plays of the adjustable armature (12) of the adjustable arms (1).
"B" dimension (at both sides) for the centralization of the bushings
Install the armatures | |||
12 | If the adjustable armature has been disassembled, assemble it by screwing the threaded end plays of the adjustable armature (12) fully into the central rod, insert the locking screws (14), lightly tighten the locking screw nuts (15) until stop, without blocking the thread of the end plays, and adjust the length of the tension bar as measure "A" | Thoroughly clean the terminal threads and lubricate them with a light layer of lubricant, only enough to prevent the oxidation of the threads.
"A' dimension for the adjustment of tensioning arms between the articulation bushing centers
13 | Install the fixed armature (2) on the brackets, insert the armature joint screws (6), install the flat washers (8) and tighten the self-locking nuts (7) | On the drive axle, the fixed armature is installed on the right-hand side of the vehicle and, on the 3rd auxiliary axle, on the left-hand side. Mount the screws and nuts at their original positions, as identified prior to disassembly.
Fastening of the fixed and adjustable control arms on the supports (with self-locking nuts)
14 | Install the adjustable armature (1) on the brackets, insert the armature joint screws (6), install the flat washers (8) and tighten the self-locking nuts (7). | On the drive axle, the adjustable armature (1) is installed on the left-hand side of the vehicle and, on the 3rd auxiliary axle, on the right-hand side. Mount the screws and nuts at their original positions, as identified prior to disassembly.
Fastening of the fixed and adjustable control arms on the supports (with self-locking nuts)
Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
15 | Install the vehicle wheels, remove the trestles and lower the vehicle
Do not lift the vehicle by supporting the jack at the center of the axles.
16 | Check the alignment of the drive axle using an appropriate device | Before aligning the rear axles, checking and, if necessary, adjusting the steering geometry is advisable
First, adjust the alignment of the drive axle, then the alignment of the auxiliary 3rd shaft.
17 | To adjust the alignment of the drive axle, loosen the locking screw (14) nuts (15) and, with an open-end wrench in the key holder for adjusting the armature (13) of the adjustable armature central rod, rotate the central rod until the correct alignment obtained, indicated by the alignment equipment | Attention: when adjusting the axle alignment, the central rod of the adjustable armature should be rotated a little beyond the required set point, then returned to the correct set point, to relieve the stress exerted on the rubber bushings. At this point, we note that the central rod of the armature can be rotated without much effort.
18 | Repeating the same adjustment procedures, check and adjust the alignment of the auxiliary 3rd axle
19 | After aligning the rear drive axle and the 3rd auxiliary axle, tighten the locking nuts (14) at the end plays of the armatures (1) | Lock bolt nuts of the control arms adjustment
20 | Take the vehicle for a test-drive and check its behavior |
