Remove

1

Fully lower the 3rd auxiliary axle

To remove the 3rd auxiliary axle lifting assembly the vehicle must be completely unladen

The most appropriate place to remove and install the lifting assembly of the 3rd auxiliary axle is on a service pit, if possible fitted with a lifting system.
If a pit is not available, place the vehicle on flat and level ground where it is possible to work with safety and block the front wheels to avoid its unintentional displacement.

Some care to be taken in case of need to lift the vehicle

Risk of serious accidents.

2

Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn off the main switch

Detach the battery negative lead releasing its end fastened to the chassis frame. Avoid detaching the negative lead end attached to the battery pole.

On vehicles with electronic engine management, observe the recommendations to detach the battery cables.

3

Detach the air piping from the pneumatic connection (13)

Plug the pneumatic connection of the lifting assembly with a suitable plug to avoid dust getting in the lifter.

4

Remove the fastening nuts (9) of the pneumatic lifter's bellows (1)

5

Remove the top self-locking nuts (10) from the "U" bolts (11) of the pneumatic lifter

6

Remove the pneumatic filter "U" bolts (11)

If the pneumatic lifter "U" bolts (11) and the bottom nuts (8) are in good condition and will be reused, do not change the position of the nuts, as they will the base to adjust measurement “C” between the "U" bolts and the beam of the 3rd auxiliary axle.

7

Remove the top bracket of the pneumatic lifter bellows (3)

8

If it is necessary to remove the lower cross member supports (2): Loosen and remove the self-locking nuts (5), the flat washers (7) and the fastening screws of the lower cross member of the suspension bellows (6)

Clean

9

Clean all the components

If re-utilizing the pneumatic lifter bellows (1), dry clean it without utilizing any liquid or cleaning solvent.
After cleaning, apply a light lubricant layer to the studs thread, only the minimum necessary to avoid oxidization.

Check

10

Check the components condition

Check the thread of the bolts, of the "U" bolts and, of the studs of the pneumatic lifter's bellows in case re-utilizing it

Installation: For safety measure, replace the self-locking nuts (5).

Install

11

Install the bottom cross member of the pneumatic lifter bellows (2) and fasten it to the brackets (2) with the bolts (6), the plain washers (7) and the new self-locking flange nuts (5).

Assemble the bottom cross member fastening bolts (2.1) from top to bottom with two plain washers, one at the bolts head and another one at the nuts and, tighten the self-locking nuts (5) to the specified torque.

12

Install the pneumatic lifter bellows (1) fitting it in the bottom cross member (2.1) and install the nuts (9) on the studs without tightening them

13

Install the bellows top bracket (3) and install the bellows fastening nuts (9) on the studs without tightening them

14

In case of using new U-bolts: Install the lower nuts for fixing and adjusting the pneumatic lifter U-bolts (8) in the suspension clamps (11) and screw them in so that a clearance corresponding to measure "C" is obtained between the auxiliary shaft tube and the clamps

In the case of re-utilizing the previously removed "U" bolts, as indicated at step 6 of the removal instructions, the bottom nuts will already be at the adjusting point.

15

Install the pneumatic lifter "U" bolts (11) and fasten them with the self-locking nuts (10) without applying the final tightening

Center the pneumatic assembly and the "U" bolts so they are not under tension (forced)

16

Normally tighten the pneumatic lifter bellows nuts (9) on the top and bottom studs of the pneumatic lifter bellows (1)

Installation:
Do not overtighten
As it may cause the studs to break.

Adjust the clearance between the lifter's "U" bolts and the beam of the 3rd auxiliary axle

17

Check and, if necessary, adjust the clearance “C” between the two "U" bolts of the pneumatic lifter and the beam of the 3rd auxiliary axle

The specified clearance “C” must be obtained with the vehicle totally unladen.

To adjust the clearance between the "U" bolts of the pneumatic lifter (11) and the beam of the 3rd auxiliary axle, screw or unscrew the bottom nuts (8) and top nuts (10), as necessary, until obtaining the specified measurement.

19

Remove the protection plug and connect the pneumatic pipe to the pneumatic connection (13)

20

Turn-on the master switch or connect the battery negative cable and run the engine until normal pneumatic system service pressure is attained

21

Actuate the control switch on the dashboard, lifting and lowering the 3rd auxiliary axle from 7 to 8 times to accommodate the pneumatic lifter components

With the pneumatic lifter pressurized (3rd axle lifted), check the pneumatic lifter for tightness applying soap foam or appropriate spray to detect any trace of air leakage.

22

Check once again the clearance between the lifter's "U" bolts and the tube of the 3rd auxiliary axle

If necessary, correct the clearance.
