Remove and install

The rear springs removal and installation services described here are basic; Depending on the type of vehicle and spring manufacturer some differences may occur, such as springs with quantities and different leafs, clamps and support formats.

Is is very important that the rear springs are repaired always in pairs, at the same axle.

Other issue to be taken into consideration is the later re-tightening of the spring clips after the vehicle has run loaded for some time. The re-tightening, whenever possible, must be carried out with the vehicle empty.

1

Put the vehicle on a flat and leveled floor. Choke the front wheels to avoid that the vehicle moves accidentally

if the vehicle is loaded, take due care during its lifting operation.

2

Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn the general switch off

Loose the screw of the negative cable of the frame rail, avoiding to loose the battery terminals too.

3

Unfasten the front shock absorbers at their lower fastenings

The surplus of travels damages the shock absorbers.

AR32.25-B-0110D

4

Unfasten the side arms of the stabilizer

AR32.35-B-2210D

5

Unfasten the rear wheels without removing them

Danger!

Take care when lifting and lowering the vehicle

Risk of severe accidents.

6

Support the vehicle on racks placed safety under its longitudinal members at both sides, at the front and back, in order to be able to remove the rear springs

Lifting the vehicle only at one side while keeping the wheel of the opposite side supported on the ground is not allowed. It must be lifted equally at both sides.

Lifting the vehicle by the center of the rear axle, at the differential is not allowed.

7

Remove the wheels

Vehicles with drum brake

8

Lift slightly the rear axle carefully until the spring articulations are free

Choke the rear axle safely in order to keep it in this position during the removal and installation of the rear springs.

9

Unfasten the nuts (7) from the “U” clips (6) slightly, without unfastening the spring

Install: Tighten in sequence and crosswise.

Whenever possible, re-tighten the clips after the loaded vehicle has been used for some time. The later re-tightening must be carried our with the vehicle empty.

10

Remove the greasers (10) from the articulation pins at the front, back and at the shackles

Install: Utilize new greasers and lubricate all the articulations. Confirm the penetration of the grease in all the articulations and clean the surplus.

11

Remove the self-locking nuts (16) and the washers (15) at the front (3), rear (4) support and at the shackle (17)

Remove the lock pins (14) with the help of a copper or aluminum hammer. Pay attention to the assemblage position.

Install: Utilize new lock pins, if necessary.

12

In order to remove the articulation pins (13): Screw the adapter on the spring's front and rear articulation pins, screw the puller in it and pull out removing the pins, respectively (13)

13

Remove the nuts (21), the external Teflon washer (20), turn the shackle (17) backwards and remove it from the articulation axle (22). Remove the sealing rings (11.1) and the inner Teflon ring (19)

Install: Tighten the first nut (21) and turn the shackle (17) in the articulation axle. Then, tighten the second nut (counter-nut) keeping still the first one.

14

Remove the "U” clips (6) and the positioner (9) from the spring (1)

Install: Put a slight layer of grease on the threads and tighten normally the nuts. The final tightening must be carried out according to the description of item 9.

15

Lower slowly the rear axle, remove the spacer washers (12) and the sealing rings (11)

Mark the spacer washers (12) to adjust the side clearances at the installation.

Install: During the assemblage use the spacer washers according to the clearance found out.

16

Remove the complete spring (1) carefully in order not to damage the main bolt head (spike)

Install: Assemble the spring on the wedge type shim in such a way the main bolt head (spike) fits perfectly

17

Remove the wedge from under the spring (6.1) and the shim guide (6.2)

Mark the position of the wedge (6.1), it is located in the caster angle.

Install: Assemble the shim's guide (6.2) in the axle and the wedge (6.1) in the correct position.

18

If necessary, disassemble the rear spring and replace the bushings of the eye bolts

In the case of damaged, worn or deformed leafs.

Check

19

Check all the articulation components of each spring

Replace:

Springs eye bolts bushings (18).

Articulation pins (13).

Sealing rings (11) and (11.1).

Lubrication greasers (10).

Lock pins with thread (14).

Self locking nuts (16).

Shackle's bushings (23).

Teflon washers (19) and (20).

Shackle (17), if necessary.

20

Check the spring's clips and nuts

Replace: If necessary, springs' clips, nuts and stoppers.

21

Check the condition of the front (3) and rear (4) supports of the rear spring.

If worn, they must be replaced.

In the case of vehicles with supports riveted on the longitudinal members, drill the rivets and install self-locking bolts and nuts of the rivets dimension.
