1

Attention when removing the springs

The rear springs removal and installation services described herein are basic and, depending on the vehicle version and on the springs manufacturer, they can present some divergences such as quantity and shape of the spring leafs, clamps and supports.

It is very important that the springs of a same axle be always repaired in pairs, i.e., the repair must be carried out always on both sides of the vehicle.
After carrying out jobs of spring packs removal and installation, consider that the fastening nuts of the spring packs "U" bolts will have to be re-tightened after driving from 500 to 1000 km with the vehicle laden.
The re-tightening of the "U" bolt nuts fastening the spring packs will have to be carried out, whenever possible, with the vehicle unladen.

2

Place the vehicle on a level place to work safely

Chock the vehicle front wheels to avoid its unintentional displacement.

Greater care to lift the vehicle will have to be observed on a laden vehicle.

3

Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn off the main switch

Detach the battery negative lead releasing its end fastened to the chassis frame. Avoid detaching the negative lead end attached to the battery pole.

4

Unfasten the lower fastening of the rear shock absorbers to avoid they are excessively extended when the vehicle is lifted.

AR32.25-B-0110B

Excessive strokes may damage the dampers.

5

Loosen the stabilizer's lateral arms

AR32.35-B-2210B

6

Slacken the rear wheel fastening nuts

7

Lift the vehicle and support it on racks conveniently placed under the longitudinal members, at both sides, in such a way that makes possible to remove the leaf springs

Do not lift the vehicle by supporting the jack on the central housing of the rear axle.

The vehicle must not be lifted on only one side with the opposite wheel remaining supported by the ground.
The vehicle will have to be lifted equally on both sides.

8

Remove the rear wheels

AR40.10-B-1100B

9

Lift the rear axle slightly, with care, until the springs articulations are free and choke it conveniently to keep it in this position during the removal and installation of the springs

10

Loosen the self-locking nuts (7) of the “U” clips (6) without unfastening the leaf spring

11

Remove the greasers (10) of the front and rear articulation pins from the leaf spring

12

Remove the self-locking nuts(16), the flat washers (15) of the threaded lock pins (14) at the front support (3), at the rear support (4) and at the joint shackle (17) and remove the threaded lock pins (14)

Remove the three threaded lock pins (14) with the help of a copper or aluminum hammer.

13

Screw the puller with the adapter on the front articulation pin (13), pull the pin out and remove it

The same way, remove the rear upper and lower pivot pins (13) from the articulation shackle (17)

14

Remove the spring "U” clips (6) and the clip positioner (9) from the disc spring with helper spring (1)

15

Lower slowly the rear axle, and collect the spacer washers (12) and the sealing rings (11)

Mark the location of the spacer washers (12) and assemble them in the same place in order to keep the setting of the lateral clearances.

16

Remove the complete disc spring with helper spring (1) carefully in order not to damage the hole of the main bolt head (spike) at the rear axle

The master bolt lodging orifice in the axle is important as it defines the alignment of the axle regarding the vehicle.

17

Check the spring leafs and the articulation eye bolts bushings

.

AR32.20-B-0231A

If the articulation eye bolt bushings are worn, replace them.

If the spring has damaged deformed or cracked spring leafs, disassemble the leaf spring and replace the defective components.

Check

18

Check all the articulation components of each spring

Check the condition and if necessary, replace:

Spring adapters bushings

Articulation pins (13)

Sealing rings (1)

Spacer washers (12), according to the presented lateral clearance

Lubrication greasers (10)

Joint shackles (17)

Lock pins with thread (14)

Self-locking nuts (16)

Upper bushing of the articulation in the rear support (18)

19

Check the condition of the springs front (3) and rear (4) supports, fastened to the longitudinal members

If the spring supports present wear, replace them

In the case of vehicles with spring supports fastened with rivets, if necessary remove the supports, remove the rivets and, at the assemblage, install self-locking pins and nuts of 10.9 quality and of the same diameter as the rivets.
Tighten the nuts with the specified moment of tightening.

Install

20

Clean the fitting orifice of the mater bolt and the disc spring seating surface (1) in the axle

21

Fit correctly the spring and assemble the clamp positioner (9)

22

Apply a light layer of grease in the “U” clip threads (6), install the "U" clips in the disc spring with helper spring (1) and fasten them with the respective nuts (7), tightening the nuts a little. The final tightening of the nuts should be applied later with the vehicle resting on the ground

Spring clips in poor condition or with the threads damaged must be replaced together with the nuts.

23

Lift or lower the rear axle as necessary and couple the spring to the front support installing the spacer washer (12), the sealing ring (11) and the articulation pin (13)

During the assemblage, lubricate slightly the articulation pin (13) and check its correct positioning regarding its greaser (10) and to the respective threaded lock pin (14).

Select the spacer washer as necessary to eliminate the lateral clearance of the spring in the support.

25

Position the joint shackle (17) in the spring rear articulation eye bolt and install the articulation components spacer washers (12), pivot pins (13) and sealing rings (11) following the same procedures described in the steps 22 and 23

26

Couple the joint shackle (17) to the rear support (4) with a new joint upper bushing to the rear bracket (18) and install the components of the articulation spacer washers (12), pivot pins (13) and sealing rings (11) following the same procedures described in steps 22 and 23

27

Install new greasers (10) in the front articulation pin and in the upper and lower rear articulation

28

Install the wheels, remove the racks and support the vehicle on the ground

30

Rock the rear part of the vehicle various times and then tighten the spring clip nuts up to the specified tightening moment

Gradually and alternately tighten the leaf spring clip nuts until achieving the specified tightening torque.
