| Remove | ||
1 | Place the vehicle on a level, flat location. Chock the rear wheels to avoid the vehicle's unintentional rolling | The front spring removal and installation works described here are basic. Depending on the type of vehicle and the manufacturer of the springs, there may be some differences, such as springs with different leaf sizes and shapes, clamps and supports.
It is important that the suspension springs are always repaired in pairs, i.e., always repair the RH and LH springs on the same axle.
If the vehicle is loaded, take due care while lifting.
2 | Disconnect the negative battery cable or turn off the main switch | Loosen the screw from the negative cable on the stringer to prevent the battery terminals from getting loose.
3 | Loosen the front shock absorbers at their bottom fastening
4 | Loosen the stabilizer's lateral arms
5 | Slacken the rear wheel nuts without removing them |
| |
Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
6 | Support the vehicle on stands placed safely under the side rails on both sides, at front and rear, so the rear leaf springs can be removed | The vehicle must not be lifted on only one side with the opposite wheel remaining supported by the ground. The same will have to be lifted equally on both sides.
Warning | Risk of injury caused by body parts being pinched or crushed as cab is tilted | Ensure that no one is within the tilting range of the cab as it is being tilted. Always tilt the cab all the way to the end position and secure it with the safety strut.
7 | Tilt the cab to facilitate the access |
| |
Warning | Risk of injury caused by pinching and crushing when opening and closing engine hood | No one should be within the swivel range of the engine hood as it is being opened or closed. Always open engine hood all the way to the end position until this engages in the front locks.
8 | Opening and tilting the hood
9 | Remove the front wheels |
| |
10 | Lightly and carefully lift the front axle until the spring articulations are free of load | Chock the front axle safely in order to have it remaining in this position while removing and installing the springs.
11 | Slightly slacken the self-locking nuts (7) of the spring “U” bolts (6) without detaching the leaf spring
12 | Remove the greasers (16) from the articulation pins at the front and rear parts
13 | Remove the self-locking nuts (18) from the front bracket (4), rear bracket (5) and joint shackle (12) | Remove the three threaded lock pins (17) with the help of a copper or aluminum hammer.
14 | Screw the puller with the adapter in the front pivot pin (13) from the spring, pull it out and remove the pin | Extractor
Insert | |||
15 | Similarly, remove the pins (13) from the joint shackle upper and lower (12) joint
16 | Remove the spring "U" bolts (6), the stop and clip positioner (8) and the suspension stop (9) from the front disc spring (1)
17 | Slowly lower the front axle (2), collect the spacer washers (14) and the sealing rings (15) | Mark the spacer washers (14) to adjust the side clearance when assembling.
.Shackles spacer washers thickness
18 | Carefully remove the complete front disc spring (1) so as not to damage the fitting hole of the primary screw (spike) on the front axle (2) | The orifice where the master bolt fits in the axle is important as it defines the alignment of the axle regarding the vehicle and can also strikes the convergence angle.
19 | If necessary, disassemble the front leaf spring (1) and replace the adapter bushing (eyes) |
| |
. | |||
In the case of damaged, worn or deformed bushings.
| Install | ||
20 | Replace the spring joint components and install it on the front (4) and rear (5) brackets |
| |
21 | Validate the cleaning of the kingpin fitting hole and the front disc spring seating surface (1) on the axle (2) | Properly fit the spring and mount the suspension stop (9) and the clamp positioner (8).
22 | Apply a light layer of grease to the “U” clips' threads (6) and install them in the spring (1) with the respective nuts (7). Tighten loosely on both sides. Then tighten up to the final tightening torque | Clips in bad conditions or with damaged threads must be replaced, together with their nuts.
Grease, DB supply specification 6804 - Class 267.0
23 | Install the new rings in the articulations the spacer washers (14) at both sides and the new sealing rings (15) | Install the spacer washers (14) in such a way that any clearance that appears is eliminated.
.Shackles spacer washers thickness
24 | Insert the pivot pins (13), lubricated | Pay attention to the original position of the pivot pins to install the greasers and the lock pins.
25 | Install in the front supports (4), in the rear support (5) and in the joint shackles (12) the threaded lock pins (17), the washers (19) and tighten the self-locking nuts (18)
Danger | Risk of death caused by vehicle slipping or toppling off of the lifting platform. | Align vehicle between vehicle lift columns and position the four support plates at the vehicle lift support points specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
26 | Install the wheels, remove the racks, support the vehicle on them and re-tighten with the vehicle on the ground |
| |
27 | Lubricate the articulation pins until the grease penetrates totally in the cavities | Grease, DB supply specification 6804 - Class 267.0
28 | Swing the vehicle in the front several times and tighten the spring clips | Tighten in sequence and crosswise.
.Spring Clip nut on front axle
29 | Fasten the shock absorbers to the supports
30 | Fasten the side arms of the torsion bar
31 | Perform a test drive, preferably on irregular terrain
32 | Adjust the parallelism of the axles and the steering geometry | Carry out the adjustments according to the technical data corresponding to the vehicle. |
